Solved RAID 0 - Reports largest disc

My understanding of RAID 0 was that the array could only create a usuable windows volume the size of the smallest disc in the array, however i have just setup a RAID 0 stripe across 2 seagate barracuda 7200rpm drives, one is 250gb and one is 500gb and my volume is 465gb reported in windows upon install

whats the story? is my array functioning correctly or not do you think?

It is using the smaller capacity, which is 250 GB. You have a striped array, meaning your computer thinks it is striping two 250 GB drives, for a 500 GB partition.

It is functioning correctly, but why waste 250 GBs of total storage for very little to no performance gain, and an increase in seek times? RAID0 is all hype.

ah yeah thats it, sorry my stupidity there, i wasnt thinking logically! the volume will be twice the size of the smallest drive!lol!

storage isnt an issue, any little gain in performance is nice, simple as that really.

Seek times will usually rise, which actually slows down everyday Windows tasks. When you add in the risks, you can easily see why the hype died out over striping 5+ years ago.
