Now I know there won't be any performance gain but I'm doing it for the fact of gaining space for two 80gb ssd's. By doing this though I know that the drives will not be recognized by the operating system as ssd's, at least the drive manufacturer and such. My question is will trim be messed up by this? I use intels toolbox to run trim now on the ssd's but their not raided and their not using nvidia storage drivers just Microsoft. If I use nvidia drivers I lose the function of the toolbox and if their raided I lose it too.

Bottom line will Windows 7 Ultimate x64 be able to keep these drives up to par or should I just leave the drives separate and use the toolbox as it is now or can I raid them and be ok by it. Getting a larger ssd at the moment isn't an option. Any advice would be great.

Thank you,

Seth

TRIM will not work, as far as Im aware.

But if you stick with the MS drivers, the Intel Toolbox should take care of Trim for you.
Just be sure to set it up on a schedule so they get trimmed on a regularly.

Note I said "should" :)

Before you start experimenting with it, I'd make a current system image of things the way they are now and put it in a safe place.
Just in case things are problematic and you want to go back to a single drive.

I was afraid of that. Sure glad for the reply Wishmaster I really appreciate it, I have experimented with in the past but I was never sure that raids were getting trimmed regularly so I broke the raid for that reason. So I will just keep the drives separate and use them how I have been doing it. Thanks again,

Seth

Thats what I would do anyway TBH.
I mean if space is a huge isuue, why not do something like ..

Put the OS and apps on the main SSD.
Leave a small 500MB PF on the main SSD but move move the main PF to the secondary SSD. maybe even disbale the Hiberfile too.
You could then just use the secondary SSD for High Priory stuff, and a spinner for all the other User DATA.

This would free up space on the main OS drive without sacrificing anything, plus Windows7 will handle TRIM for you.
I dont think youd really miss anything (in terms of perfromance) from the RAID anyway.
If Im not mistaken, the biggest adavantage of the RAID will be writing very large files to the drive(s). And for the OS drive, this is not important anyway.

But if you truly want the RAID setup, so long as the Intel toolbox is running itself periodically, it should get Trimmed.
Its just, Windows7 will not Trim automatically if in RAID.
This is why I suggest setting a schedule, so you do not need to worry about it.

Exactly, that is what I do at the moment Wishmaster is split up the programs and write to the second ssd for 95 percent of the programs I install just by changing the drive letter of where they install. I have tried the raid in the past and I know that the toolbox doesn't work cause the raid causes the drives to be unknown to the toolbox and like you said it's better this way cause I know they are getting trimmed. Thanks again..Seth

Oh, I missed the part the Toolbox wasnt recognizing the array. So sorry.
I was thinking was only if you used the Nvidia drivers.

At any count, you really aren't missing much anyway :)
