Solved Random BSOD, Computer Restarting, Began Recently

The BSOD just began recently and the computer restarts. I did see an error related to Microsoft Security Essentials, so I uninstalled that. Not long later, the computer restarted again. I updated and ran Malwarebytes and nothing was found. Also ran CCleaner and let that do its thing. Ran the Windows hard drive error checking and no problems were found. The problem still exists.

Tried a sfc /scannow, but at 70% complete, it returns, "Windows Resource Protection could not perform the requested operation."

The only thing that I can think of that has changed recently was that I installed a SYBA PCI-Express 2-Port DB9 RS232 serial card (SD-PEX15022). I have a couple of these cards installed on identical PCs that are not going to BSOD, so I'm not sure if that was just a coincidence that the crashing came soon after.

Thanks for any help.

Hi DJConan,

Welcome to the 7forums :)

Microsoft Security Essentials is the most stable AV for Windows 7, I recommend that you reinstall it.

Please update the BIOS to version F4

Hi axe0,

Thanks for the reply. I just tried to update the Intel Rapid Storage drivers and as soon as I try to start the installation, I received the error "the setup program ended prematurely because of the following error: [String ID not found].

This computer is at a remote location, so I cannot update the BIOS today, but will try to get on location this week to do that.

Update: Must have been a dad d/l of the driver. Tried again from a different source and managed to get the latest driver installed.

After updating the Intel Rapid Storage driver (and restarting), the computer crashed as soon as I went into the Control Panel.

the computer crashed as soon as I went into the Control Panel.
Assuming this crash was a BSOD a new zip is necessary.

If you are using a program like Ccleaner please stop using it while troubleshooting.
This because programs like Ccleaner remove dump files that are needed to troubleshoot.
Or configure Ccleaner to not remove dump files:

From where did you install the Intel drivers? They haven't changed.

I ran CCleaner once earlier and have no plans to use it anymore. There were no crashes over the past 24 hours. I will be picking up the PC to bring home with me and work on it in about 20 hours.

I used the link you posted earlier and d/led the driver from there.

Lets try this
Remove Intel Rapid Storage Technology applications.

1. Uninstall it from Control Panel > Programs and Features.
2. Uninstall the driver from device manager:
- Right click on "my computer" icon and click "manage" on the context menu.
- In the "Computer Management" window that opens:
- Select "Device Manager" in the left pane, It will list all the existing devices.
- Expand "IDE ATA/ATAPI controllers" by clicking on the triangle in front of it.
- Select one Intel device item under it, right click, then uninstall.
- Repeat the process for all Intel items under "IDE ATA/ATAPI controllers"
3. Now restart the computer.
4. Once booted, Windows will auto configure the appropriate native system driver.

Two nights ago, I swapped the SSD with another exact match PC to isolate the problem. Earlier today it crashed again, so at least i know it is either related to the SSD or the software on the SSD.

I just did the steps you outlined in the previous message a few minutes ago and after doing those steps, I collected the new data that I am attaching now.

One thing I noticed after uninstalling the drivers and letting Windows replace the drivers is that now there is an "ATA Channel 0" along with the "Standard AHCI 1.0 Serial ATA Controller." Prior to the removal of the drivers, the "ATA Channel 0" was missing.

The system has not crashed since updating the Intel Rapid Storage Driver, so I guess at this point, I will say thank you again and consider this problem solved.
