Hi, i have a BSOD error 0x0000124 problem. It happens randomly, whether i'm using chrome or just going though my computer folders. I recently bought this laptop, a Lenovo thinkpad T430s. I installed my own SSD drive on it. I tried reinstalling windows a couple of times but still get this error every once in a while like every other day probably. I did a clean reinstall and installed all the latest drivers (from the thinkpad site/intel) and made sure everything was up to date, bios, ssd, etc. Nothing is overclocked. The computer isn't under any heavy stress when this error occurs. Please help me resolve this issue!

System info:
Lenovo t430s
intel i5 3320m 2.6ghz
Windows 7 Home Premium x64
OEM clean install
intel 520 240gb SSD
4gb ram (planning on upgrading the ram)

Hello surf and welcome to Sevenforums.

BSOD Analyse

You have had the WHEA_UNCORRECTABLE_ERROR 0x124 bugcheck code. It usually indicates bad hardware, overclocking or driver related issues. Let's do some troubleshooting.

  • Any sort of overclocking should be stopped. I saw you've posted that you ain't overclocking, but make sure that you're not having a motherboard feature that overclocks your computer automatically.
  • Make sure that your computer is running cool. Install Speccy for instance, and make sure that fans are running at the right speed. Also track down weird or noisy sounds.
  • Your BIOS is updated, good.
  • Windows 7 may have bugs in the OS if you ain't updating. Make sure that Windows Update is running on automatic updates, and not manual, or the 'never' feature.
  • Let's stress test some of the hardware. The most common causer within hardware would be the memory -

There could be a driver could be causing the memory to be borked, but we're usually suggesting a memory test before moving forward. Do a scan with Memtest86+. Memtest is a scanner that'll check your sticks for errors. To ensure that we'll know if it's the slots on the motherboard that's broken, or the sticks itself - we have a little procedure we'll recommend. Remove 1 stick, scan the other with Memtest in the current slot. After 7 passes, move the stick to another slot and scan, and so on and so forth until you've scanned all the sticks, and all the slots, one by one.

Memtest86+ - Advanced Memory Diagnostic Tool
  • The next would be your processor -

  • If you have your system under warranty, consider replacing it.

That'd be a bit on the 0x124, a bit tricky bugcheck.

Best Regards,
Frederik.

surf,
You have an excellent laptop.

My approach to these problems is different.

First, forget SpeedFan. That can do you more harm than good. With a laptop and lenovo, the laptop will automatically be throttled and the fan controlled. You can not improve using SpeedFan.

What you can do is install SPECCY (link in my signature) and use SPECCY to keep an eye on your temps. do let us know the current temps when the computer is busy.

What I need you to do is to fully update your specs which helps us to help you.

Update your SevenForums System Specs
User CP (located on the top menu bar) |
Your Profile | Edit System Spec
(left-hand column)

To gather info, use Speccy (my favorite) or SIW or System Info

In the System Manufacturer Block, enter:
Manufacturer and Model and
ADD the word laptop, desktop, netbook or tablet.
For example:
Toshiba Satellite L305D notebook.

Provide full windows version info, for example:
MS Windows 7 Ultimate SP1 64-bit

Use the “Other Info” block for Optical Reader,
Mouse, touchpad, wifi adapter, speakers, monitor, etc

Scroll down and click on SAVE CHANGES.

You will find that in Speccy, you can select info from the display
using your mouse/touchpad and then paste that info into your specs.

SIW is a marvelous program, but the free version does not offer
this capability.

Need you to 100% update your Win 7.

Read this procedure and follow this procedure. ALL updates must be installed!

UPDATING YOUR WIN 7
1. ASSURE THAT YOU RECEIVE ALL UPDATES
WIN | type WINDOWS UPDATE | ENTER |
Change settings (left-hand column) |
checkmark all four of the boxes | OK
button

Approve any dialog boxes presented. Let Windows install any update features.

WIN is the key with the Microsoft flag on top.

2. INSTALL CRITICAL UPDATES
Check for Updates
(left-hand column)
Install ALL critical updates.
Restart your computer (even if not prompted)

Repeat this procedure until there are no more critical updates.

DO NOT TRUST the “Windows is up to date” in center of dialog. until you see that TWICE IN A ROW!

3. INSTALL IMPORTANT UPDATES
Use the “critical update” procedure until all important updates are installed.

4. INSTALL OPTIONAL UPDATES
Use the “critical update” procedure until all optional updates are installed.

Under Optional updates you will be presented with a list of about 34 language updates.
You can hide those updates so that aren't continually notified of those updates. When you click on 34 optional updates are available, then you
a) highlight all of the language updates,
b) right-click anywhere in the highlighted list.
c) click on Hide Updates,
d) OK button.

UPDATE GOLDEN RULES

Install ALL, yes, ALL updates.
This is Win 7 and not Vista or XP (eXPired).

UPDATE IS HUNG –TAKING FOREVER
Hung is very doubtful unless you interrupted updates.

CTRL + SHIFT + ESC key combo will pop-up the Task Manager.
Lo and behold, Windows Update is still running!

You hold down the CTRL and SHIFT keys.
While holding them down, tap the ESC key once.

Thanks, I really like the laptop, got it for a good price also. Windows update is all up to date 100%. Updated all the system specs in profile and tested my temperatures, CPU average temperatures not busy 42, motherboard average temp not busy 40. For Busy temperatures, CPU 60 and motherboard 60. Tested busy temps by running a video, iTunes and Microsoft securities essentials. I don't think this laptops motherboard has an automatic overclock setting

I also ran windows debugger for my bsod and got this:

Not sure what GenuineIntel problem means though. I also got another bsod while on chrome on this website, and I've uploaded a new bsod file also. I haven't had time to run memtest86+ or prime95 yet...

Thanks for the help

I'm amazed that the laptop even runs!

You have so much on there that you don't need and some of it quite harmful.

Take care of this before we go further:

WIN | type MSCONFIG | ENTER | STARTUP tab
uncheck ALL except for:
IntelliPoint Microsoft Corporation "c:\Program Files\Microsoft IntelliPoint\ipoint.exe"
MSC Microsoft Corporation "C:\Program Files\Microsoft Security Client\msseces.exe" -hide -runkey

Lol and I have even less then before since i uninstalled a bunch of stuff. But i did everything, and uninstalled utorrent. I was using the computer for 6 hours straight yesterday and i haven't come up across the bsod yet, was playing mass effect 3 for an hour to see if anything would happen, no bsod. This was before i uninstalled utorrent and edited msconfig

EDIT: i saw someone else was having a BSOD 124 error while running Intel Burn Test, so i though i'd try that out, Intel Burn Test had no problems running and says that everything is stable and fine...

Hi again,

So, i've had no bsod with normal use, but while using Prime95 with the power pluged in and cpu set to maximum turbo(intel turboboost) in Power Manager, i get the same bsod error 124. If i run Prime95 with the cpu mode set to balanced(on battery), i can run Prime95 no problem for 1 hour and a half. With prime95 and cpu set on maximum turbo power, temperatures can get around 85 for the cpu and motherboard. I've read online that this error might be caused by high temperatures or low voltages, on maximum turbo mode my voltage for idle is 1.051v-1.061v and when i run Prime95 it goes down to 1.046v. Not sure if any of these are the problem? And also i've ran memtest86+ overnight and no error at all.

Maximum turbo mode is Intels own method of overclocking *faceplam* should have realized that..... But I think I fixed the bsod error, with maximum turbo mode on by enabling turbo boost+ (maximum fan speed) to cool down the system a bit more... not 100% sure since I only ran Prime95 for 30min. Balanced mode is for regular cpu speed, and I've said that I haven't had any problems in that mode on battery, so I shouldn't have any problems with that mode plugged in. I'll run more test to be more certain.
