Random BSOD on Win7 x64

Hi there,

Been having this problem since i got a new system with win7 ultimate x64 installed. Really hate to bother you guys but i've been up to my head over this one.

The BSOD I get is very random. Once it happens with just Google Chrome and x2 xplorer apps opened. I just went to the bathroom and saw the BSOD when i got back. Happens a few times while playing games. Happens more often while playing video files, specifically mkv files with DXVA enabled. I can get the BSOD maybe once or twice in a day, sometimes I can use the comp for about a week with no problems, or sometimes just 2 or 3 days.

I've tried running diagnostics on the hdd and ram with no problems. I've tried using only 1 piece of RAM. Then i got bsod and tried the other piece of ram(i have 2x2gb). Then I tried using different ram slots. All no go. The only thing I don't have spare is a video card. I've tried ati drivers 10.4 (initially 10.2 and 10.3) didn't help.

Hi Atty

Some of the experts on SF here will provide you some feedback on your minidump.
I'd like to address the basics:

1. Have you tried updating your motherboard drivers?
2. You could try downloading, then installing, the latest version Microsoft DirectX version from here
3. Did you ever try the software driver for your Graphics card that came with the hardware? I believe that the latest driver have addressed some of the earlier hardware issues but sometimes, vendors have their own versions of the ATI driver modified to suit their own hardware
4. Is your OS updated?

Pretty straightforward, your network drivers are causing the issues. Please update them in Device Manager, or uninstall them and install a fresh copy.

It might also be your anti-virus making it look like your network drivers. I also suggest removing ZoneAlarm and running this removal tool: http://download.zonealarm.com/bin/free/support/cpes_clean.exe

Then install Microsoft Security Essentials.

Niiice. Thanks a lot guys. I'll try the network drivers 1st and then go from there. Hmm install AV software from Microsoft? I'm trying to stay away from as many MS products as possible

No way, Microsoft Security Essentials should not be avoided. Who do you think knows Windows best, Microsoft or ZoneAlarm?

MSE has never caused a BSOD as far as I have seen.

After talking with another BSOD expert, I am even more sure that your problem is ZA, not your network drivers.

Give both a try. Let us know how it works out.

I've updated my nic drivers. Just got another BSOD 3mins ago, happened while i paused an mkv file.

I'm gonna remove ZA now and see what happens. Will keep you guys posted.

Btw does MS Security Essentials act as a firewall as well?

No.. MSE is not a firewall... You can use Windows native firewall or use a 3rd party firewall... ;

Well I haven't sorted that out yet lol. I heard Comodo is pretty good but it's kinda difficult for me to use. Just can't get along with the interface. I might try Online Armor. You've got any good recommendations?

I suggest using the built-in Windows firewall. That's what I use, and it's worked well for me.

It won't have the performance affect like a third-party firewall will, and it's guaranteed not to cause BSODs.
