Random OS Crashes

Hello,

I am running factory installed Windows 7 Starter on an Asus Netbook.

Two months ago, the OS began to randomly stop, going to a black screen with no prior errors or warnings. The unit remains powered, but will not respond. Forcing a shut down and rebooting thus far has been successful every time, only getting a 'not shut down properly' notice and an option to 'start windows normally.' Once rebooted, it operates just fine until it happens again, sometimes four or five days later, sometimes within a few hours, there is no discernable pattern.

It has done this while in active use, but seems to do it mostly while the unit is on but not in use. MS Security Essentials scan is clean every time. The unit does not seem to be running hot and I have yet to see any kind of error or experienced any kind of processing issue other than this recurring stoppage. I have run the on board system maintenance troubleshooter and no issues were discovered.

I would very much appreciate any insight or suggestions.

Thanks!
