on Thursday my PC unexpectedly rebooted and there was an error message on the post screen saying that it had rebooted due to a power surge (there was some thunder and lightning at the time but the other pc on the same power extn has a similar mother board and it wasn't effected). Since then the video will randomly ether not start or randomly die. I have tried a different card and reseating the old card but this still happens everything esle still seems to work as the when it has worked the pc boots as usual. I think that its the motherboard but i am not sure

Hey and welcome to the forum!

Is your pc plugged into a surge protection extension lead? or directly into the mains socket? if its the latter, it could be down to a fault PSU caused by a serge. You could test this one of 2 ways.

1) If you have any spare 4/6pin rails on your PSU try powering your GPU from them and see if its still affected (this will eliminate just one bad part of the GPU)

2) Try another PSU if you can get your hands on a spare one (everyone ha a geeky friend who has plenty of them laying around.. i happen to normally be that guy lol).
