Rcvd: "This copy of Windows not genuine" w/o initiating anything

I purchased my laptop from a pawnshop about 6 months ago. The gentlemen stated that he had his IT Tech wipe the laptop then load it with Windows 7 Ultimate. Since I purchased it from a pawnshop, the laptop only came with a power supply. This past Wednesday I was working on various documents then took a dinner break and when I logged back into my laptop I received a pop up stating something about my copy of windows is not genuine and I may be a victim of counterfeit and that is when I seen “Windows 7 Build 7601 This copy of Windows is not genuine” in the lower right hand corner of my screen.


I have ran AVG, Malware as well as SUPERAnti-Spy Ware, which did not find anything relevant and then re-booted by system and I am still receiving the same message. I have conducted a System Restore to a restore point one week from Wednesday. When that did not fix anything I then undid the System Restore. I am not sure what else I can do or what is wrong, I would greatly appreciate any troubleshooting advice, ideas, or insight as to why this is happening and how I can fix it.

I'm afraid your copy of Windows is a counterfeit one using the stolen LENOVO key.

You will need to purchase a genuine Windows 7 installation, and then format the hard disk and reinstall and activate using this genuine version.

Is there a COA sticker on the bottom or under/inside the laptop battery door?

Yes, there is a COA sticker on the outside. It is pretty worn but I believe I can read all of the letters. I cannot tell what version of Windows the COA is for and if it is suppose to state the version on it I cannot read it.

It won't hurt to try, but its a real shot in the dark. Try changing the product key to the one on the COA sticker

I have tried changing the key, a few times, and every time I received the Does not appear to be a valid Windows 7 key...

Thank for the troubleshooting advice as I didn't think to look for a COA sticker.

I will purchase Win 7 tomorrow and begin the reload process then.

Unfortunately, it's common practice for counterfeiters to remove the versioning information on COA stickers to confuse the issue - it hides the fact that the installed version of Windows isn't the licensed version.

As far as replacement goes, you almost certainly won't need Ultimate edition, and you probably won't need Pro Have a look here for the differences between the various editions and make sure that you get what you need, rather than what's good for your bragging rights (but not your pocket)!

Compare Windows 7 - Microsoft Windows

In theory, you could get away with an Upgrade version, since you have a COA sticker (you can do a clean install with an upgrade - see the tutorials) - but I'd advise the Full Retail version so it can be moved to another machine without any problems if you find you need to for any reason.
