Dear All,

I have a brand new HP Pavilion TS 15 Notebook PC and has Windows 8.1 SL.

We are using RDP to connect to our App server. The App server is running on Windows 2008.

When i try to connect to the server the client is showing "Because of Protocol error the session will be disconnected. Please try connecting to the remote computer again "

We have other Windows 8.1 machines connecting remotely to the server without any issues.

Tried a lot of fixes from MS but no use.

Please guide on a work around.

Thanks,
Sriram A Das

As this appears to be Windows 8.1 issues, there is a separate Windows 8 forum. May be best to post there.

Windows 8 / 8.1 can act as an RDP Host (= the computer you will connect to using RDP) but not as an RDP Client (= the computer you are using to connect to another computer). To be able to act as both Host and Client, you need Windows 8 / 8.1 Pro.

As far as I know your HP laptop model comes with a preinstalled basic Windows 8.1, so it can only be used as RDP Host; you can connect to it from any RDP client but not connect to other RDP Hosts like your Windows Server 2008.

To get the RDP connection to work to your RDP Client server you need to upgrade to Windows 8.1 Pro (or Enterprise if volume licensing is available to you).

Only workaround would be using a third party program to connect remotely to your server. This, of course, would need the same program being installed and configured on both your HP laptop and server.

A good one (personal opinion) is RealVNC. It's not free, though. TeamViewer gets the job done, too, being free for personal use but needs to be paid when used professionally. LogMeIn is also worth checking, no free plans available except a short trial period.

Dear Kari,

We were able to solve the issue without an OS Upgrade.

We just unchecked the persistent bitmap caching in the experiences tab of the RDP client, it worked.

Anyway, thanks a lot for your support, just wanted to share the information with the community.

Thanks,
Sriram A Das

I am happy you got it working. Happy and ashamed; I use RDP a lot but still got my terms mixed up in my answers to you. The basic Windows 8 can of course be used as an RDP client but it can't act as an RDP host.

I totally blew it and am now apologizing you. With my experience I should not make this kind of mistakes, however bad day I have.

I have never used / are not using any other Windows editions than Professional, Ultimate and Enterprise (Windows 7) and Pro and Enterprise (Windows 8). This will explain a bit this error of mine; as I have not had any basic editions of Windows to use as an RDP client I didn't even bother to check. I just mixed things in my head and posted according to that.

Getting the facts wrong is really not good, now I did it. Sorry.
