I just can't figure this out for the life of me.

I have two computers - my desktop is running 7 Professional, and my laptop is running 7 Home. I can connect from my laptop to my desktop with no issues from within my private network (using private IPs) but I cannot get it to work from the outside-in. I've made sure that my router is forwarding port 3389 (I've also subsequently changed my listening port to something else) and configured my firewall as such, and it won't work. I've tried enabling DMZ on my router, and even completely turned off my windows firewall, yet it still will not connect by using my public routeable IP. I just get a popup error on my laptop saying "Remote desktop can't connect to the remote computer for one of these reasons..."

I'm not running any 3rd party firewall - I'm only using the windows firewall.

Any other advice?

Thanks for the info. I'll give it a try, but first I have to rule out the possibility that my router is not forwarding the connection properly.

Also, be sure that your ISP is not blocking access inbound on 3389. It's not likely, but not completely out of the question either.

I don't think that would be the case, because I changed my port to 3988, and it still won't connect.
