Is it possible to reinstall WMP12? Is there an .exe file somewhere i can download or some way to do it off the Windows disc?

I don't think there is one for windows 7 as it is built in. What happened to the player that was on it anyway? just google wmp12 and check the results. i have just done it but can only find it for xp and vista. You could try system restore if you have uninstalled or whatever you have done to not have it now. Or if that doesn't work you could try repair install.

Hi Ephumuris,

There is no installer or method of reinstalling WMP12, You either have to use System Restore or a System File Check (sfc /scannow) to restore WMP12 ;)

Steven

If you've uninstalled it you can get it back by control panel -> Programs -> Turn Windows Futures on or off

Check the selection next to "Media Features" or expand that tree and select Windows Media Player (if you only want the wmp)

Is it not possible for someone with wmp12 installed to just copy their files and i replace the ones that are messed up or missing?

i would imagine it would be possible to extract them from the disc if you know what files you needed. i havnt done it in a while, but we used to do it all the time in the shop i worked in on win 98, and early xp.

It wouldn't make a difference if we did, You still need to run a System Restore and a System File Check to get it working regardless :sarc:

Since Vista, The Install DVDs use a new format called WIM or Windows Image Format and you would need to downlaod the 1GB Windows Automated Installation Kit (AIK) for the tools to Extract the WIM file, decompress the required files and remake the Image ;)

System Restore is the only way your going to easily solve what you did, It only restores your System Files not Personal Files and takes about 20mins ;)

I wouldnt have thought it was possible to extract all the files. They could be all over the place and then theres the complex registry entries.

What do you know... sfc /scannow is something new to me. What exactly does it do? I now have WMP12 again i just don't know how that thing helped! :D

EDIT: Love this site. Maybe i'll turn system restore on. I never used it in the past always turned it off.

SFC just verifies system files have the same signature they did when built by Microsoft, any file found to have a different signature is replaced with the original file that has the correct signature ;)

I used to disable System Restore myself, then I realized how stupid it was if you needed to undo something system-wide you just did...There is no performance penalty using it, it doesn't run while your using the system, the only downside is how much space you allocate for restore points ;)

Steven

I just re-installed mine, or/either made windows take a second look and refresh the broken parts...

I have had a problem for some three or four days where the windows error reporter has been cropping up every ten seconds or so and in task manager and I had to disable one by one numerous processes before I finally looked and saw in event viewer that the error that had been repeated around 12000 times in the task manager was a Wmplayer.exe error.

Symptoms additionally to above were no playing of media files, opened Explorer windows in Explorer would "Jiggle" every ten seconds or so and the mouse pointer would "Circle.." like it was working on something, Google Chrome was refusing to launch, and Windows Explorer crashed more than once..

Looked around to see how I could fix this by maybe re-installing etc (Just like you could in XP etc..) but no such luck. I had of course tried rebooting and shutting down and was loathe to roll back or run sfc/ scannow unless as a final resort as I wasnt sure what the consequences would be with the OS and all my personalised settings.

Anyway I finally went to the control panel and disabled the media player in the programs and features panel then I turned off the media player there and it seemed to run a silent un-install that took maybe 2 minutes.

The feature asked me to reboot confirming that something must have been removed maybe? It certainly behaved as if it was more than a simple switch thrown..

So I did a reboot and then re-enabled the player again in the Windows features panel and there was no need to reboot this time but I am happy to report that Wmplayer has performed smoothly since.

Fixing (Enabling-rebooting-re-enabling..) Wmplayer removed all the above mentioned symptoms.

There are no more reports in Task Manager and the problem has been fixed.

I hope this helps someone. :)
