realtek high definition audio and high definition audio device problem

Hi everyone, I would be very grateful for some help please!

My laptop recently installed a BIOS update - I don't know what this was but since it happened I have been having sound problems with my laptop. After the update I had no sound. I read around and found how to get the sound back on - I did this by uninstalling AMD high definition audio device and high definition audio device. I would then restart the laptop and the sound would be working again. But when the laptop would be turned off, on turning back on it would re-install the above 2 things again automatically and the sound would no longer work.

I noticed that when the sound was working realtek high definition audio was listed under sound, video and game controllers in the device manager and when it wasn't working this wasn't there. Every time I uninstalled the AMD high definition audio device and high definition audio device the realtek one would be automatically installed when the laptop was restarted but then taken off on the next restart. I tried disabling the first 2 to see if that made any difference but it didn't. I noticed the drivers could be removed for the AMD high definition audio device so I tried that - that is now fully removed but I still have the problem with sound.

My laptop keeps automatically installing high definition audio device. When this is listed the sound doesn't work and the realtek high definition audio isn't listed. When I uninstall that - on the first restart the realtek high definition audio is listed again and the sound works but on turning the laptop off I have to go through the whole process again as the high definition audio device is listed again and no sound!

Please could anyone advice me how I can sort this out? Is there a way I can stop the high defintion audio device from installing on restart so that the realtek high definition audio remains along with my sound! Disabling the high defintion audio doesn't make any difference.

First, the AMD High Definition Audio Device is ONLY for HDMI audio. It has nothing to do with the PC audio (speakers and/or headset).

Are you sure it was a BIOS update? Those are normally not automatic. The BIOS is the heart of the PC and controls the hardware configurations.

The basic Windows installed High Definition Audio Coded/Device is a generic audio driver. It can be installed for the PC audio and/or the HDMI audio. As this is a generic, basic function driver, the correct hardware driver needs to be installed.

Without the actual HP model number, I can't research what actually belongs on your PC. Apparently it is RealTek, but as it isn't functioning properly, or conflicting I still need to research the PC's specs.

Thank you very much for your reply. I uninstalled the AMD high definition audio device (along with the drivers) to see if it fixed the problem but I'm wishing I hadn't now as notice you say it is for HDMI audio which I use sometimes and so now I assume I will have no sound with that and will need to sort that out once I can sort this first problem out! Hopefully I can re-install it all and the drivers - I assume I will be able to?

I think it was a BIOS update but not really sure - it wasn't a usual windows one, I just remember the fan being super loud when it was updating and assumed it was BIOS for some reason but can't remember why! Whatever it was the sound stopped working afterwards - at first I remember wondering if it was some kind of virus but there doesn't seem to be any problems. I'm not very good with computers though!

The product name of my laptop is HP presario CQ58 notebook PC and the product number is B3286EA#ABU.

There are two drivers you need to download and install from the HP downloads.

(1) RealTek sound driver. There are two listed, download and install the latest one.
(2) AMD High Definition Graphics Driver.

There are no BIOS updates listed so I doubt that you were automatically sent a BIOS update.

Hi maxie, Thank you for letting me know that - I notice the links aren't there now I'm logged in so it must have just been the first time I came on to check my post - lucky I didn't download anything although I did click on the link but scanned my laptop and all seems fine.

Thank you for your help fireberd. At the moment the high definition audio device is the one showing in the device manager.
Please can you tell me if I should uninstall that again before downloading the other 2 things? Do you think once I have downloaded the latest versions of the other 2 the high definition audio device will stop automatically installing? Would you have any idea why it started to install and cause the sound problems? Thank you very much!

I would just download and install the two drivers, without uninstalling anything. Then check for results. First Step.

With RealTek, if another version is installed, it will first uninstall that version, have you reboot the PC and then install the new version after the PC has been restarted.

I'm still having trouble unfortunately. I tried downloading the above but the same thing is still happening. However I am unsure if they have installed correctly. When I try to install I get the message:
Overwrite protection
The following file is already on your computer
Do you wish to overwrite this file?

I clicked no as wasn't really sure but should I click yes? Not sure why the file is already on the laptop. Also when I get to the end of the process it says :

The programme might not have installed correctly. If this programme didn't install correctly try re-installing using settings that are compatible with this version of windows.
Options
reinstall using recommended settings
This programme is installed correctly

I don't know how I know if it is installed correctly though? Any further tips much appreciated! Thank you

Edited to add I also tried clicking 'no to all' instead of just 'no' which didn't seem to be doing anything and it seemed to then start installing correctly and said 'welcome to the install shield wizard for realtek high definition audio'. I clicked next and it said 'realtek high definition audio driver is configuring your new software installation'. So I seemed to be making more progress when I got to the end it said 'install realtek audio driver failure!! Error code [: - 0001]. Maybe its because I clicked 'no to all' and should have clicked 'yes' or 'yes to all' in the overwrite section?

When you get the message file is already on the computer, click yes to overwrite. Then the driver should install (reinstall).

Thank you, I clicked yes this time but for the realtek high definition audio driver I got the same message but a different error code which was : 0xE0000235. With the AMD installation I'm up to a page that says 'select express or custom install and then click next'. Please can you advise me which one to choose?

Edited to add that i tried disabling the 2 high definition audio controllers in system devices (due to something I read on another post) and the realtek now seems to have installed without the error code so just about to restart and see what happens! I enabled the 2 high definition audio controllers again once it had installed

On restart there is sound again so fingers crossed! Until I've had it on and off a few times I'm unsure if fully solved though until I see if that high definition audio device automatically installs again which hopefully it won't.
I'll just wait to hear what to choose for the AMD installation and then I'll start to turn on and off a few times! Thank you

I read around and realised I needed to choose express so the AMD had installed now. I haven't checked if the audio is working with the HDMI cable yet though. But unfortunately the sound problem is still the same :-(. I shut down the laptop and on restart it automatically installed the high definition audio device and no sound. Shut it down again and the realtek was back and sound working again, so it seems its still going to do the every other time thing of installing this high defintion audio device automatically. Very grateful for any more tips!

Choose Express for the AMD install.

OK sorry - I am really grateful for your help - so I've just tried to re-install the realtek again in the original way without disabling those 2 options I read about and even though I clicked yes still I get the error code I got the first time which is 0001 (and says install realtek HD audio driver failure!!)

I'm not sure what your status with the sound driver is now. I try to avoid suggesting a reinstall, but sometimes it takes that to get everything resolved. Reluctantly I'm going to suggest that with this.

HP has a video on doing a reinstall or "Recovery" as they call it. But, before you do the "Recovery" you need to back up any user data to some other media, such as a USB flash drive, CD/DVD's as user data will most likely be lost in the Recovery.

OK thank you for your help and time. I think I'll just continue uninstalling the high definition audio device for now which then gives me sound on the next restart as I can't face doing the recovery and possibly losing everything on the laptop at the moment but will look at it at some point.
