RealTek OnBoard Sound Issue - No Sound

Hello everyone,

My audio has seem to quit on me. I updated to the newest drivers for my mobo (biostar A870U3) from their download page and now I get no sound whatsoever from my speakers. I have tried uninstalling all of the sound devices from the device manager and letting windows reinstall them, but to no avail. I have also made sure that the onboard sound is on in the bios. When I uninstall the sound devices, it defaults back to the windows default audio driver which won't recognize something is plugged in.
It greys out my speakers and then defaults to the Digital Ouput, but I have no such device. I then have also tried downloading the onboard audio drivers from the mobo download page and installing them. They install but it then defaults to the Realtek Digital Output (once again, I don't have such a device). If I go to the realtek HD audio manager and disable front panel detection, it doesn't even recognize any of my back panels being plugged in. Even if I try to plug in my headset mic, the manager doesnt pic it up.
If I play music at this point, the speaker shows the level volume changing but I dont hear anything. I've tried switching back and forth all configurations in the manager and changed the levels of things, still nothing. Can anyone help? Or am I gonna have to go pick up a sound card?

That picture also shows it trying to use the front jack, which I dont have hooked up because I want to use the back panel. So I'm assuming that may be part of the reason. And those disabled High Def Audio Devices where from my video card and where sound output from it, but I uninstalled those as well seeing if windows installing them would help. I don't use it anyway so I disabled them.

The first thing I see is four HD Audio devices in the Device Manager that should be uninstalled (RIGHT click on the entry for the device and then LEFT click Uninstall) then restart the PC. Get rid of them to eliminate any possibile conflicts.

If there is a "default" setting for the sound outputs, set it to default and see if that helps.

I notice a web cam that is also showing up. They can tend to cause issues too so temporarily disconnect that from the PC while you are trying to get the system audio setup.

Ok, I will try that as soon as I get back to my apartment. However, I have uninstalled those before, but they reinstall themselves. They are the HD sound out of my video card which I don't ever use. I uninstalled them and deleted the drivers along with that, and thats what they ended up as after I rebooted. But when I get back to my apartment, I will attempt to unplug my usb webcam and try again.

Still nothing. I had Spotify open this time and was playing music but nothing was coming out:

When I open the speaker properties, it still says Jack Information -> LR Front Panel 3.5mm Jack and not my back panel. I uninstalled all of those used-to-be nvidia HD sound drivers and disabled it actually under system devices so they wouldnt try to reinstall themselves. Then I uninstalled the realtek sound device and deleted the drivers. I rebooted and windows installed that default driver again. That didn't play anything. I ran the executable for the realtek driver that I got from the mobo website and rebooted. Still nothing.

Do you get any sound from your speakers if you click on them in the Realtek Audio Manager?

No sir, I tried that too. I've tried it on all of the configurations it gives me too. Stereo etc.

Are your speakers actually working? Is there another audio source that you can test them on, such as the TV or radio? Do you have headphones or an alternative set of speakers that you can try? If your BIOS has the option, does its front audio setting match the front panel you have connected? Which brings me to another possibility. Since the motherboard has HD audio, it is possible if the header is incorrectly wired that you might be inadvertently muting the rear sockets. Try unplugging the front panel audio lead from this connector and see if this enables you to use the rear sockets normally.

Thanks for taking the time to help me The speakers work. I plugged in my phone into the speakers and they work fine. Only when I plug in the speakers to the system, do they not work. The only setting my BIOS has for my onboard audio is to enable/disable/auto the HD Audio Azalia Device which I have to enabled. My front panel is not even connected, because I don't ever use those jacks and the case cable doesn't reach those pins on the board because I have a PCI NIC card that is down there.
I don't know if this is relevant, but I think I am getting some line noise as well. I have a subwoofer that my speakers connect to and this little round hub connects to, that controls volume etc. And then the little round hub connects to the computer by a 3.5mm jack. If I turn up the volume by the hub, you can hear a high pitch noise and sometimes one of my harddrives spinning up. This may be just wire sheilding issue, but I thought I'd let you know. I know this all works, because that is what I plugged into my phone and everything worked, even the sub. I've even tried just taking the speakers themselves and plugging them into the computer to no avail.

My microphone that isi from the driver also seems to be at 100% all the time? I don't even know why. I don't have any mic in. It's even like that whenever no audio device is plugged in. It's like the driver is trying to use my front panel stuff regardless. Like, it's not picking up any of the rear ports. And regardless of how many times I uninstall/reinstall.

Ok,this literally happened to me after i installed a sound card,the plugs weren't responding and the speakers were grey,defaulting to optical. This is exactly my problem but i already RMA'd the mobo because i thought i broke it or something. Does anyone know how to fix this??? This is the only thread that has my problem and nobody found a solution nor responded to it in months! Come on guys!!

EDIT: I've done everything he has done and i've the same symptoms as him!!! The high pitched beeeep,the grey speakers,the 4 nvidia from the video card,everything! Come on guys,or OP,what's the solution!

Hi there.

I had the same problem using the Soundscience Rokus speakers and all I had to do was update the drivers for the Realtek HD Audio thing lol. Then it worked fine

I know this is an old thread, but I wanted to post something I found while having similar issues.

I recently purchased a headset from Turtle Beach (MW3 Call of Duty). The installation was as simple as connecting the USB cable and power to the device and the headset started to work very well. However, I could not get sound to my regular speakers after that. The speakers are plugged into the green audio jack in the back of the computer and driven by Realtek High Definition Audio sound hardware and drivers. In the Playback devices area, the green bars rise and fall as if sound was being generated, but nothing would come out of the speakers. Clicking "Test" would either do nothing or give an error that "the device is in use by another application."

I read many forums and tried the following: update realtek drivers; uninstall realtek drivers and reinstall; disable Turtle Beach audio and restart; uncheck "Allow application to take exclusive control of this device"; uninstall the realtek software from the uninstall programs part of the control panel; and so on and so on...

So I finally got this fixed and wanted to share my findings in one of the forums in hope that others will "have one more thing they can try..."

Right click the speaker icon in the lower right tray and choose Playback Devices. Right click on your speakers that are not working and choose properties. Go to the advanced tab. Adjust the Default Format. In my case, it was not working at any of the "Studio Quality" settings. However, as soon as I dropped it back to DVD Quality (16 bit, 48000 Hz) it was fixed. I can now go in to the Playback Devices area and switch between the headset and regular speakers by simply right clicking one and setting it as default and right clicking the other and setting it as disabled. Just note that you might need to right click in a white area and check the boxes that let you see disabled and disconnected devices.

I hope this helps a few people that stumble on to this. Very frustrating problem...
