I got a 120gig ocz solid series ssd of ebay $150 and got it shipped to Ireland for an extra $30 on top of that, the performance gain is totally worth it to be honest! I would recommend going for a good quality ssd ahead of putting 2 cheapies in raid though because the ssd model thats just above mine on the ocz range is actually more than twice as fast as it has cache and a better controller among other things and its not double the price!

That's a really good price!

I didn't even consider eBay - I'm going to have to have a hunt around now!:D

hey it beats mine. whats your ssd like? i been thinking of just getting a cheap one from somewhere, but not in Australia as most things like ssd's are overpriced here, it almost always cheaper to buy in the USA.

have you ran HD Tune on it by any chance? i would be interested to see the results ;)

maybe if i get 2 cheap ssd's and run it in raid 0 (i have never used raid so i will be a noob at it) it might be as fast as 1 good quality ssd?

I can't really compare it with anything else - I'm a noob with SSDs; I was just filling my shopping basket up, and thought I'd give it a try - 100 quid for a 64GB desktop kit, was the cheapest by a mile. There certainly seem to be faster SSDs out there, but I'm amazed at the speed of this TBH.

Oh, and no noise - for the 1st time in years, I've actually built a system where I can actually hear the wall clock tick! I stuck a Be-Quiet 650w power supply in the case (Antec Sonata) which has dedicated fan power leads - these ramp up on power-on to get the fans pinning, but then modualte the speed depending on power-demand from the PSU - a very neat idea, and when performing light-load tasks results in an almost silent system - the F3's clicking are the loudest component! (Stuck a passive cooled 4670 Ultimate in to keep it quiet.)

Don't know anything about HD tune - what does that do?

check it out, i would like to know how yours scores, as im seriously considering 2 el'cheapo ssd's (PQI 32GB) for raid0 just for the experiment, and from the research they have similar transfers rated to your kingston.

This is the HDD benching thread, if you get bored, check out the scores of some ssd's in there:
http://www.sevenforums.com/performance-maintenance/4269-show-us-your-hard-drive-performance.html

download HD Tune here (its a free trial):
HD Tune

yes the old 'no-noise' days were good. i built my htpc for silence, but my main rig on the other hand, when the fans are cranked it sounds like a supercharged vacuum cleaner.:p

Oh, but you do! :what::D

We've been talking 're-start' times, merely booting is child's play!:D ...and that's with checking the DVD drives and accessing a floppy (yes, I still use them!)

I thought some of the BootRacer posts were bl**dy quick, even with much faster SSDs and a Core i7 I was struggling to comprehend how they could be SO much faster - and now I know!:D

I guess we should post both BootRacer and Restart Time results to get a more balanced picture.

ill admit im an ebay junkie! i save a poo load on ebay buying from outside of Australia, i spent about 2500 on a car stereo system from the USA, here the whole setup not installed would cost just over 6000. and the SSD's, i wont even mention how much they are here in Australia, but i can get 2 for the price of one from the US. but i would be careful when buying high end components from Japan/China/H.K. as they do a very good job at disguising products with a false identity, dont get me wrong as im not a racist, but the facts have been proven there is more fraud from that area of the globe than anywhere else. but i did LOVE shopping in H.K.! the Golden Computer Arcade was my HEAVEN!! (and cant wait to go back) When i went there, they had all this 'Vista capable' stuff on boxes, i kept thinking what the hell is Vista? lmao. us Auzzies dont have much tech advantage here.:p

And MUDMOVER, that was one heck of a bargain, scores like that dont come around much, so you have to keep an eye out!

as much as some people wont admit it (lol) we all need ssd drives. they are the wave of the future along with sata3 6gb/s.

there is no doubt about it, an ssd will outperform a mechanical hdd, even the vomit from velocity raptors cant keep up with todays ssd's.

or better yet, lets pray that one day they will continue developing ram drives. now that would be good, to have ram drives coping without dataloss when under volted.

Yeh, I used to do a lot of travelling around the Far-East, plenty of rip-off merchandise to be had - even when you think you're buying the genuine article. Then there's the bag n switch scam in some of the shops in Kowloon, pop your box into the bag, momentarily goes out of sight behind the counter and you're handed a different bag with cheap knock-offs inside. Even the police don't want to know!

Still, I used to really enjoy just cruising around the computer malls in Hong Kong and Bangkok too (I remember the Golden Arcade well!), floor to ceiling with stuff that's hard to find over here.

I used to be somewhere in the Far East pretty much every month although I mainly travel around Europe now - but outside of the UK is so expensive with the collapse of the pound, I tend to look for bargains closer to home.

hmmm so does it physically boot slow, like the program is saying, or does it boot fast and the program is showing some random time?

if it does boot slow, does your computer have all that HP bloat-ware installed? start-up programs play a big role in reboot times (as i discovered from a fresh install)

Interesting thread. That said, there are so many factors in rebooting...including what was happening in your last session, how many services you have running that must be shutdown, *how your BIOS is setup* (e.g., what self-tests it is performing at boot, is it scanning for the CD for boot, ...), how many services it is starting up.

The measure that I have used in the past is how long it takes from the moment the BIOS screen clears (i.e., BIOS tests are finished) until the moment I get a usable login screen. That was 17 seconds on my PC for 64 bit Win 7 Pro when I first installed the OS and it is up to 19 now after adding more software/services. Seems very good, but that same time measure was 10 seconds on a laptop that I had running Windows XP back in 2002. The good news is that when I login to win 7, I seem to get to a usable desktop much faster than I did with XP.

Either way, I have been happily surprised. I had heard that Win 7 boot time was glacial...and that does not seem to be the case for me at all...and I am not running raptors in RAID 0. :)

Well the problem for me is that I get a black screen after the Welcome screen...and it stays black for about 90sec...after that everything starts up and I can work as I want to.
If I start the computer in safe mode it starts REALLY fast and the black screen dont appear but as soon as I let any other program autostart...then I´m back at 3min startup. But enough of that...I have another thread that I try to fix that problem in.
