I know there have been several threads about RA2 and LAN/Internet play but after following all the advice that came up from a search within the forums I still have one problem.

All I wish to do is play a multiplayer game over LAN between two PC's running Red Alert 2 updated to v.1006.

Under the network area both PC's can see each other but when I try to create a new game I am always prompted with "you must select a game". Nothing happens as I am unable to select a game.

Can anyone tell me under multiplayer over LAN why I am unable to select a game, yet both PC's can see one another. I would dearly love to play this with my son who is now old enough to play such an iconic game from the past.

Thanks

Lee

For the record I have:
Two PC's - one laptop Win7 64Bit and one desktop Win7 32Bit
Wirelss LAN ( UK BT HomeHub 3 )
RA2 LAN Patch from another thread here, placed into RA2 game directory ( C:\Westwood\RA2 )
Firewall on but allowing for RA2 game.exe to pass through

Whenever I wanted to make LAN connections like this you had to either go through a Peer to Peer network or use a program. The program I used most often was Hamachi that was lightweight and worked great.

Just for testing, try disabling the firewall completely and see if you can see each other game. Look for antiviruses that might include a firewall too if you're using one. On LAN there is no need for anything extra, since peer to peer works directly having no routers in the middle.

Hi all,

Thanks for your replies. I have somehow got it to work but only to host on one of the two PC's
All exe's ( RA2 and game ) including shortcuts are run as admin and win98 ( XP didn't work ). But both exe's needed to be done.
The screen has overlay which means no matter what resolution I select the network options screen has overlaid boxes and graphics.
I have read somewhere about directx, ddraw, problems and a few other issues.
Both pc's had RA2 uninstalled and re-installed. Both installations were run as admin under win98 compatibility.

Anyway unless you are aware of why there is screen overlay I can at least host it from one PC on multiplayer. Don't understand why the other PC can't host it but hey ho.

Thanks

Lee
