Red X On Notification Tray Speaker Icon

I had a problem with a program that I installed, that required me to do a System Restore, which for the most part seems to have corrected the problems, but one remains that has me puzzled. Normally, upon rebooting the speaker icon has a red x for a second or two before disappearing, but now it doesn't disappear. The sound is working okay, the sound mixer doesn't show anything muted or awry and there is nothing amiss in the Device Manager's sound section, so what is with this X?

Something changed in either registry or device driver. Is there anything not working?

You can try creating a restore point, then uninstalling and reinstalling the sound driver in Device Manager.

I uninstalled the problem program previously, and when I found that it has messed up the file associations, and I couldn't restore them to their previous state, I decided to do a System Restore. At first, I thought that it had worked okay, but the restore point that I used was the one that was created when the program was installed. I assumed that this would return it to the state before the program was installed, but when I looked the program that I had uninstalled was installed again.

I did a second System Restore, and it seems to have fared better, because the red x disappeared as usual, and when I click a link in my email client, it doesn't complain about not finding the app.

The only oddity left that I can see is that the email client is displacing the speaker icon in the notification tray, instead of taking it's usual position at the other end of the icons.

The program that caused all of this mess is Opera. They just released 10.50 final, so I had hoped that it wouldn't caused problems like I have had with every alpha, beta and RC before. Stupidly, I didn't bother to run Acronis's Try & Decide, because when I installed/uninstalled the RC a few days back without that running, it worked okay.

I'm going to try one more time with 10.50, but this time with Try & Decide running. I'm not sure, but I think that the problem that I'm having is due to a skin that I download. The crashes don't seem to start until I skin the browser.

The red x on the speaker icon is definitely a glitch in Windows 7. I've had that happen to me since day one. Even when I have only just installed Windows 7 and hardly added any programs to it, I see that. Just like you said mate, the sound still works even though the red x (I assume) tells me that it shouldn't. Slightly annoying glitch, but I can live with that for now.

It sounds as though you have had the problem too long to use a System Restore to fix it, but have you tried the other repair functions? Even though mine delays a second or two disappearing, it does now disappear as it did since I installed the OS.

I've noticed this on the odd occasion. It's as if the icon status isn't reflecting the physical status. I've found that if you toggle the mute it tends to correct itself.

The same happened to me the other day, i brought up the volumn thingy and muted it and then turned it back on and the red X went away and hasn't come back
