Registry corrupts after restarting, every time.

So I'm on my 6th fresh install. Install is on a brand new 10k rpm HDD, installs perfectly fine. Windows boots up. All is well. Works great, run some windows updates, all is well. But once I reboot the computer, Windows boots directly into that repair utility and tells me the registry is corrupt. I cannot restore to a back up, the repair utility does not work.

Only solution has been to reformat/partition and do another fresh install. With the same results.

I'm thinking one of the windows updates is causing this. I tried rebooting without installing any updates. Works fine. Anyone have any idea why this is happening?

What are the updates? Maybe post a screen shot of all the ones you're installing. And you could also take a good look in the Event Viewer, see if you can find any relevant information about it and post that.

There's also Disk Check you could run.

I'm currently installing them one by one and rebooting after installing to try to narrow it down. These have been sucessfully done so far:

Leave the Raid controller and ACPI utility updates for last. One of them could potentially be responsible.

Alright, a few interesting things.

After installing the Realtek driver (Which should be the integrated audio driver) this popped up. I just selected recommended. I don't think it's an issue.

The SB Audigy Driver installed no problem. Same with the Samsung (Monitor) Driver.

The graphics driver failed (partially, Nvidia control panel functions just fine which was installed by that). Failure screen:

Windows 7 did not boot properly and took me to the repairer. It reverted it to a previous restore point (Oddly enough, it I say yes, restore: it fails to and I'm forced to reinstall Windows 7 BUT if I tell it no: it restores and allows me back in). It greeted me with this screen:

Also through previous testing Windows Media Player had stopped working, so I tried to open it after this misboot and got this screen:

I did not try to install the Raid controller and ACPI utility yet.

After the restore it put me back to this state on updates:

And of course, media player will not load and the only way to fix it is to reinstall Windows 7.. Sigh.

Locate and install KB974817 to upgrade and repair WMP at the same time. If you already did that anytime previously, uninstall the KB974817 and run the patch again.

What build of Windows 7 is this you're installing, and where did you get it from?

Have you looked in the Event Viewer at all for any relevant information there?

Windows 7 Ultimate 64 bit. Purchased directly from Microsoft via Expertzone.

I'm not finding an official source for KB974817, only torrents. Hopefully I'll find a legit one.

What is this Event Viewer you speak of?

Torrents are good for this. It's a WU patch from Microsoft. You can't fake those or tamper. I'm sure it's possible but out of the realm of anyone that would care to bother. I'd upload you my copy but I'm x86.

You won't find it "legit" as it was released by underground and not public.

From the search bar, enter event viewer, and navigate to the apps section... if there are any critical errors, then take a screen shot using the snip tool and upload it...

Yes, just closed and reopened the viewer, that's the latest entries. Hit refresh aswell. It's 2:25 AM here now.

Maybe I'm not understanding completely, but why are you getting a Realtek audio driver update when you have SB Audity as well? Maybe that's part of the problem?

I installed it first then disabled it. The Realtek is integrated into the motherboard, the SB Audigy is in PCI slot and is what I use. Just prefer to have all drivers installed if possible so I don't have question marks in my device manager.

Could I do without? Sure. But how/why that would corrupt my registry (worked fine that way in XP)? Besides, after I installed both of those drivers it rebooted fine, it was once I tried to install the Graphics driver that all hell broke loose. Could be that the one windows is telling me to use it wrong...

Still unsure why it goes as far as corrupting the registry. I... I dunno.

A possibility. I never install graphic drivers fron WU if they're offered. I borked one of my installs before with a graphics driver update from WU. Have no idea why it went sour, but I always install the latest graphics drivers for my card from the official site, which in your case would be Nvidia.
