So often I have seen my request by others only to be told, it cannot be done. :o
I don't know where to turn to

... thought it would be worth an ask

Purchased Lenovo e540 in Aug-2015, 2 weeks later I had a stroke without ever taking the laptop out of the box.
Nov 2016, unpacked the Lenovo and activated/registered online with MS.
- back into its box
May 2017, I successfully made a clone of the HDD_1 onto HDD_2 using free AOMEI BackUpper
- cleaning junkware off HDD_2 after using Revounistaller PRO HDD_2 would not boot
Jun-2017 local PC Shop installed non Lenovo Win-7 PRO x64 along with a lot of commercial programs I did not want.
They charged $200 to reinstall Windows ... about 1\3rd cost of the Lenovo (my problem) :(
--------
somewhere in here I screwed HDD_2 (500GB) trying resize C:\ partition to clone to SSD (215GB)
Jun 2017, trying to clone HDD_2 (500GB) onto a 125GB SSD
- free AOMEI BackUpper is partially crippled and will not allow editing partition sizes on smaller SSD during cloning.
---------
- HDD_2 using free MiniTool I tried to resize C:\ partition to clone onto HDD_1
- HDD_1 would no boot
26-Jun-2017, Purchased AOMEI BackUpper PRO + AOMEI Partition Assistant PRO
HDD_2 as OS and broken HDD_1 USB connected ,
- Recover Partition (5 hour scan) with AOMEI Partition Assistant PRO found nothing
- proving the HDD_1 is dead

HDD_2 MS Safely Remove not listing all connected devices on Lenovo
- ran Brinks Notification Area Icons - Reset BAT file to clean Notification Area
After reboot no MS-SR atall
- I tinkered in Services and turned on anything that looked like MS-SR
- now I have MS-SR but no list of connected devices (all USB) and 50% of "services/programs" are not listed at all in Notifications list ...

In desperation I concluded a fresh reinstall of Windows is the only path I can see

I do have Win-7 PRO x64 ISO (Digital River Media update) phantom SP2, downloaded before MS shut down Digital River.
- and I have a range of info/numbers/strings given to me by the PC shop about 2 weeks ago

I would be very grateful for any help to dig my way out of the hole I have dug for myself into. :o

If this thread needs to be moved please do so ... I didn't know where to start thank you

Witch win 7 brand came with the Laptop?
Does it has a COA stick with a key on it? Look under the battery.
Did the shop that installed the Win7 pro gave you the MS installation disk? If not, it was probably a pirate copy.
To install Win 7 you must have a activation key.

Depends what type of activation code it is.

That is why you use pidcheck to tell you if it is oem, oem-slp, or retail.

Which win 7 brand came with the Laptop?
Lenovo OEM Win-7 PRO x64

Does it have a COA stick with a key on it? Look under the battery.
Yes

Did the shop that installed the Win7 pro give you the MS installation disk?
No ... Lenovo do not provide Disks only a Recovery partition

I had already activated the Win-7 OS last November 2016
Laptop was with IT Shop because the PC would not boot.
In post #1 ... I corrupted system partition with bootable MinTools (BMT)
- Before apply changes in BMT I could not read some of the "changes list" so assumed everything was OK
- but BMT GUI cannot be dragged nor resized.
- lesson learned: I will use AOMEI Partition Assistant PRO to resize partitions in future

Lenovo only allow one attempt at making a Recovery disc and then the wizard wipes Recover Partition
Now I cannot find those disks

I did attempt a Partition Recovery ... after 5 hours no files at all in System Partition :(

If not, it was probably a pirate copy.
It is not a pirated copy because I activated the OS online with MS. No problems

To install Win 7 you must have a activation key.
The sticker with battery is for Win-8 PRO x64, but Lenovo pre-loaded Win-7 PRO x64
at first MS rejected the OS (with IT Tech) because there had already been 48 re-activations
- after phone calls to Lenovo and MS ... MS agreed those multiple re-activations were for a group of Lenovo PC all preloaded with Windows on the same manufacture date
(all beyond my expertise)

There are 3 types of licenses. Retail, OEM and OEM SLP.
If you have the OEM SLP you wont be able to reinstall with the normal media. You will have to use the Lenovo disks.
Please run this http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/?LinkID=52012 and post the results here.

Normally the software that creates the recovery disks doesn't wipes the recovery partition. It puts a flag that says that the disks has already been created. If you remove the flag you'll be able to create them again.
If you have the Recovery partition (with or without the flag) you can launch the recovery from inside Windows or from BIOS.
Open Disk management, expand all columns and with the snipping tool take a snapshot and post here as an attachment.

@ SIW2
I downloaded Ultimate PID CHecker
I dont know what I should be looking for ... should I post image of PID results here. ?
U-PID matches the the list of keys the PC Tech gave me.

In the past Brink has advised to never post results of OS info in threads

Clean Install Windows 7
I dont have disks, other than the failed recovery disks I made using Lenovo feature.
Nor did the PC Tech give me any disks for the non-Lenovo OEM that they installed

This is a new Lenovo Laptop that has never been used, other than to activate on line in Nov-2016
- it was unstable from day #1, lots of lagging images (resembling failed ScreenUpdating)
- and slow WinExp responses
- I will never buy a laptop again, because of the bloatware that Laptop manufacturers install.

@ Megahertz07
I found What if the MGADiag.exe is ran and then What? to try and understand how to "translate" the results of MGADiag.exe into something I can understand.

I have used "Ultimate PID Checker" ... and I think the results of that indicate all is well. (?)
- but then I am not running Lenovo OEM any more
The non-Lenovo OEM was installed by a local PC shop, they have several branches on the east coast of Australia.
- when I was working full-time they built multiple machines (over several years) for me to run AutoCad

The laptop came with Win-8.1 PRO x64 upgrade disks, but the Lenovo was preloaded with Win-7 PRO x64
- I originally activated the Win-7 on line with MS without any problems.

I am holding 3 TXT files "Reports" I have created with suggestions by SIW2 and Megahertz07.
- but I do not like the idea of making those reports public in this thread.

----------
SPECS:
Win 7 PRO x64 ... non Lenovo OEM

Hi bawldiggle,

OEM activation is motherboard based you can change the HDD as many times as you like, MS might go squirrelly if you change it more than 3 times in a month.

run this tool copy/paste the output
http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/?LinkID=52012

NOTE NOTHING in it will compromise your installation or be the cause of any privacy issues.

Roy

during your conversations with MS, did they give you a recovery key

Hi bawldiggle,

That report tells me its using a COA sticker code key.
The W7 SLIC table is present, it also confirms that it was W8 originally downgraded to W7.
Note i believe that comp would have auto activated with the factory installed key
237XB-GDJ7B-MV8MH-98QJM-24367 which should be on your list

Just appears not to connecting to the windows server, is it connected to the web.

IT IS NOT GENERIC, its for and from a

As you have a Digital River Phantom SP2 ISO, Pro hopefully, and it will be bloatware free
I would just go ahead and do a clean install.

During the install SKIP the product key installation, as i said previously im pretty sure it will self-activate.

Then goto that models driver page at Lenovo install ONLY the system updater, for your drivers
suspect that its got USB3 ports they wont be on the ISO. AND likely thats why USB3 devices did not show up.

@ torchwood :)
Note i believe that comp would have auto activated with the factory installed key
237XB-GDJ7B-MV8MH-98QJM-24367 which should be on your list
When I get to the point of activation would I have to enter the 237XB-GDJ7B-MV8MH-98QJM-24367 string. ?

Just appears not to connecting to the windows server, is it connected to the web?.
No not yet, machine does no have any AV.

IT IS NOT GENERIC, its for and from a
LENOVO 20C600BVAU
Is that a Lenovo-with-bloatware version ?
I have not a clue what a "LENOVO 20C600BVAU" is ?
- AU = Australia? ... a batch of OEMS preloaded by Lenovo Australia ?

Digital River Phantom SP2 ISO, Pro
The ISOs I have are all 32bit, save one Enterprise Evaluation 64-bit. :(
For memory only Ultimate can be modified (in its ISO form) to be all editions ?

Only today I have found some leads to Digital River files.
On this (wife's) PC it takes about 5 hours to downlaod 3GB she is on WiFi, my laptop is on LAN.
With a very long patch cable to wife's rig I will download the Win-7 PRO x6 (media update) version tonight
and check the hash-code.
I have had to be a "defective" tracking this stuff down, I just hope the hash-code ok's the download.
Is there any way of calculating the ISO via the URL ? (something like VirusTotal does , I think ?)

see my reply to your post Jan 2016 re USB3 drivers
No sign of "torchwood" after my post #182
- or am I looking in the wrong place ? PM me if I am not looking in the right place ;)

The Lenovo has 2x usb3 and 1x usb2 ports. And they are not coloured to indicate either.
Another lesson in buying PCs

Hi Russell,
your comps complete version name is
Lenovo Thinkpad E540 model type 20C600BVAU,
(you need the type to get the correct drivers)

As and when you have downloaded the OS, Heidoc is my site of choice.
Change your Bios to boot from CD first
Format your HDD/SSD's as i believe your cloning efforts have corrupted it/them
perform the clean install on your >>smaller<< SSD. with NO other devices attached
DO NOT INPUT YOUR PRODUCT KEY (SKIP/NEXT on that screen)
update the drivers, install all your programs THEN
IMAGE not clone the completed install

your usb3 ports sholud have blue borders/inners

Roy

Mega, i believe he's quoting generic non Lenovo as the install was done in the repair shop with commercial bloatware. the resullts are from the Lenovo see above

What you mean with "Results of MGADiag based on (generic?) non-Lenovo Win-7 PRO x64 OS"?
My Lenovo has a non-Lenovo OS installed (no Lenovo extras and features)
Read post #1

Was MGADiag results (posted ) from your Lenovo or from another computer?
I have 7 PCs, only two of them have internet connection, the other 5 are for AutoCad and by contracts cannot have web connection.

The MGADiag report was created on the problem Lenovo laptop, it does not have internet connection yet.
I "posted" the report from the only PC with Internet connection ... ! That is what USB devices are for.

I am not as foolish as to create a MGSDig report for the wrong PC

Hi Roy (torchwood) :)
you are ahead of me (a psychic) well timed :)

your comps complete version name is
Lenovo Thinkpad E540 model type 20C600BVAU,
(you need the type to get the correct drivers)

Thank you, drivers have been in the back of my mind

As and when you have downloaded the OS, Heidoc is my site of choice.
Heidoc will not supply an ISO for OEM and I don't have a retail version to qualify for an ISO from Heidoc
Heidoc redirect me to the machine vendor (Lenovo) and Lenovo do not support failed recovery discs.

But I have located an original Digital River Win-7 PRO x64 (meda update) ISO.
- downloaded and hash codes are a match (SHA1 and MD5) file name: X17-59186.iso ;)

Change your Bios to boot from CD first
My boot window states to use "Enter" to access BIOS, it is actually "F12".
(another chore to fix in another thread)
I have used bootable MiniTools to simplify the existing HDD OS to a single partition.

Format your HDD/SSD's as i believe your cloning efforts have corrupted it
I removed all partitions on the spare HDD (with AOMEI Partition Assistant PRO); then reformatted the HDD
... then perform the clean install on your >>smaller<< SSD. with NO other devices attached
DO NOT INPUT YOUR PRODUCT KEY (SKIP/NEXT on that screen)
Thank you for this advice, it is where I am not very confidant.
... update the drivers, install all your programs THEN ... IMAGE not clone the completed install
If I get stuck with drivers I will give you a call
...your usb3 ports should have blue borders/inners
Lenovo must have shares in the black plastic market. All USB ports are "black"
Only this week I finally tracked down which ports are USB3 and USB2.
A bad design decision by Lenovo

I do appreciate your help and staying with me
Thank you

Russell

I'm sorry, that came to my mind. You have no idea what I've seen on the Forum. Sorry.

If the PC came with Win 7 it's possible that you have a Factory recover partition of Win 7.
Normally you can launch it from inside Windows or from BIOS.
Did you try to launch it from BIOS?

post #7 Lenovo only allow one attempt at making a Recovery disc and then the wizard wipes Recover Partition
Now I cannot find those disks.

Wisdom after the fact is like 20/20 hindsight.

Normally you can launch it from inside Windows or from BIOS.
Did you try to launch it from BIOS?
I did not know recovery can be be booted from BIOS
post #1 ... Jun-2017 local PC Shop installed non Lenovo Win-7 PRO x64
From I assume an ISO file No recovery partition

There is no hope of using recovery, it is long gone. Lenovo are not interested in any support
only to offer Win-10 (for a fee) and I would still get all the Lenovo bloatware again.
In the past I had an Acer Vista Laptop that was woefully slow, downgraded to non-Acer XP.
End of vendor bloat and it served me well for about 3 years.

This whole execise is to ...
1. learn something about maintaining my PCs
2. divorce my dependance of commercial $$ IT techicians.
3. take more responsability for all my machines health
4. the satisfaction of learning something new
5. get my Lenovo working again
