reinstallation dvd hangs on starting windows screen

Just because it's new from Dell doesn't mean it hasn't been sitting around for a while.

You need to try a different installer.

There are basics, and from your first post it is clear the DVD is not loading.

The first step to test that is to try a different one, all this HDD swapping and testing is really unnecessary.

It has already shown it can be seen in your computer so there is nothing to test.

Isn't the Seagate being seen in the BIOS, it looks to me like it's the ST31000 below the USB HDD, so the computer is seeing it.

It's the media, and that's what needs to be the next step.

well then ill have them send me another dvd.....im not spending 90-100 bucs for new software on a comp thats not mine and probably will be sold AFTER it gets fixed......but dell dvd was free.........what about this then.............yes when i hook the seagate HDD up to my sata adapter then hook that to my own computer (like i have been doing from the start)......i go into disk management and i see MY OWN OS and i see DISK 2 Which is the seagate.......ok.............BUT how come when its plugged into my computer with the USB and adapter etc, I USED to be able to see it as OS(H) now, it doesnt even show up at all....

Which will undo everything you did in command prompt because it will assign a drive letter to the active partition windows 7 last I saw.

Do as you wish too it's your time and no money spent.
Dell really doesn't care = pay for their support pretty much what they want anyway

yea well, if they send me another dvd, ill see what happens................maybe i should just wipe it clean again, so its empty, then take the proper steps to get it ready for the win 7 reinstall dvd and see what happens

Yep start over,
This time do the surface test I've posted probably 3 times now using mini tool
That will at least confirm is the hdd is worth using again.

I believe you just found out why putting an os on a large hdd is a bad choice
Large hdd's are better for data only not operating systems because they are very slow
Get a smaller ssd for the os I would suggest a 250gb then use a large 7200rpm hdd for games and personal data.

i have the mini tool site bookmarked, i was actually just reading thru it all.......I guess i have to download it to MY OWN computer.....then plug the other HDD in and open the tool thing and make sure it cks the dell hdd not my comp hdd.....

if thats the case, why do these companies BUILD these systems with a 1TB hdd and have win 7 home prem preinstalled on it??

sister isnt a gamer , she uses MS office for things and surfs net, has her pictures and music on it, other then that, thats it.....its only 3yrs old....i just think, she had so many high level threats and some virus crap on it, and that couldve really screwed up the hdd.......because its odd how 1 day it worked, then she did win updates and then after restart, it just went right to win loading files and froze...........launch repair it froze, restart normally , it froze.....last known good config, it froze.......starting windows...it froze..........and after all i did to this hdd, and then trying to reinstall with a dvd for her system, i get the same thing..........yes windows loading files, is actually loading files, not just a white bar, like it was before all this....but then starting windows, and it stops...........

Mostly because these hdd's are cheap and depending on which brand can be dirt cheap
Stick with well known brands Samsung black series hdd and Samsung 850 evo ssd

Well as stated the surface test will confirm the hdd it will just take forever to complete seeing it's 1tb.

Another advantage in keeping music and personal files on a separate hdd if she sells the machine all she needs to do is remove the hdd and put in a new machine,

Format and reinstall the os on the smaller ssd or hdd = done.

250gb is plenty of space for office and os. actually more than enough I've been using that for years and still have 60% left over with a little music on it about 14gb

dell said the dvd was tested before it was sent out as is all their products... and it worked fine..

Yep just give them the 120.us and make sure you state as long as they install it with the disk you have you'll pay for the support

just ordered a new hd from amazon, it was 25 bucs......320Gb is PLENTY of room for sisters use, and if she sells it, its still a decent size for everyday use...............I just have to get my brain thinking again as to what this new HDD should have done to it, if anything, before i put the dvd in to install win 7

You shouldn't have to do anything to it besides installing it.

let the OS do the work then, make partitions etc, so boot from dvd and thats it then and let the dvd do its install........i do know once its done i need to ck device manager to see all whats needed, driver wise, then install them

Yes on a good day and with good install media all that is needed is to boot to the device and hurry and wait

update on the pc and win 7

just letting you know..........i got the new HDD put it in then i set the dell to boot from win 7 reinstall dvd.....windows loading files screen, then starting windows screen and FROZE yet again.......

i decided to see if the dvd was good or not and put it in an old laptop...the reinstall dvd went thru...windows loading files, then starting windows, then continued thru the rest of install til i stopped it........So i know it works..........next thing i did was take out the optical drive and got a new one, thought maybe its the dvd/cd drive not working right.........well got it to boot from dvd again and windows loading files screen, then starting windows screen...then FROZE yet again...........

so a new HDD, and NEW optical dvd drive, a win 7 reinstall dvd that worked on a laptop..............

so why in hell wont it go past starting windows???? dell knows the model of the desktop pc and sent me the right dvd......why would the dvd load and install on an old laptop, but not on the desktop with new hardware????? supposedly 64 bit system cause the memory modules can expand to 8 or so GB of ram......the goofy laptop was an old emachine and it had vista on it.............anyone have any ideas
