Hey all,

Just did a format on a client's machine that was just given to me. It had OEM Win7 Home Premium 32-bit on it, but there was no CD key tag on the case anywhere when I got home, so I used the Magical Jellybean Keyfinder to get the key from the OS. The System window in Control Panel stated the install was supposedly "Genuine".

I used an OEM Win7 Home Premium 32-bit disk I had laying around to reinstall the OS...all is well, OS is reinstalled, but now the OS won't activate the supposedly "Genuine" key that I had before, giving me an 0xC004E003 error code...?

Thanks for any and all help! :)

Some more info - I can't seem to bring up the "phone activation" option? No matter what I do with the options in System/Properties/"Activate Windows Now" there is NO option anywhere to choose a country and call for Activation like there should be...?

EDIT - Added the MGADiag Log file:

This machine shipped with Vista installed (manufactured Oct 2008 and Windows 7 wasn't released until August 2009) - and cannot support a Windows 7 OEM_SLP Key such as this.
The earlier install must have been supported by a hacker's Activation Exploit.

The best option - if there is no COA sticker at all present - is to reinstall using the proper manufacturer's Recovery media for this machine.
Second best is to purchase a new Full Windows license.

Just curious what you mean by "cannot support a Windows 7 key" it meets the system requirements for Windows 7 by leaps and bounds?

I know there are retail keys and OEM keys and that retail are store-bought and OEM are "from-the-factory", but I don't know much more beyond that...:o

The machine may meet technical requirements - but NOT licensing requirements.
This machine was built more than a year before Windows 7 was released - and there is no way on this planet that it can use the currently-installed Key for activation without the support of a hacker's Exploit.

I don't understand though....I've installed Win7 on an older Dell laptop that originally came loaded with XP that was built in the first few months of Vista being release and I was using a legitimate Win7 key? Is it specifically the OEM aspect of this key / machine...?

An OEM_SLP Key is ONLY valid on a machine which was preinstalled with the related OS at the factory - it cannot be transferred to any other machine.

Was this the same for Vista as well?

I transferred a "preinstalled-from-factory" Vista key (as you describe above as being impossible...?) from a broken newer Dell machine to my mother's older Compaq machine earlier this year when WinXP reached EOL using no hacks / tweaks whatsoever and it activated no problem...?

Apples and oranges, two different scenarios.

Your original post tells about a machine which has originally been shipped with Vista OEM but had now Windows 7 with an OEM_SLP key. As the OEM_SLP key can only be legally used by manufacturers who pre-install OS, the only way it could have been used in Windows 7 on that computer you mention in your original post is through an activation hack which automatically makes it a counterfeit installation.

Ok, sorry for the questions to clarify! :) It just sounded similar to the situation I had before which worked (as mentioned above, computer originally shipped with WinXP OEM, installed Vista OEM key on it from different machine), so I just wanted more of an explanation!

I'll tell the client they have to find another copy or buy one.....I figured the key was put on using hacks in the first place to make it appear "genuine" as the computer is a bit sketchy (Acer motherboard inside a cheap non-Acer case, loose screws rattling around in it when I got it, 1 fan mounted with only the two top screws, DVD drive not even screwed in....looked like somebody had quickly cobbled it together to make some quick cash...)
