Reinstalled Windows 7-Certain devices not working

First off i'm using an ASUS, Model: K53E laptop with Intel Core i3-2310 processor at 2.10GHz, 4GB of RAM, Windows 7 Professional 64bit.

What Happened: I was using my laptop fine for a few month now. I let a friend use it for a week and he "somehow" got a virus . I wasn't too stressed as i didn't have any personal information or anything important on it. So i reinstalled Windows using my flash drive, the iso from the Windows 7 Professional 64bit CD i had, and the Windows USB-DVD tool downloaded from Microsoft. I changed the boot priorities in BIOS to my USB drive, went through the installation setup and formatted all the partitions on my HDD and installed windows 7 professional 64bit. It loads up and for the most part works fine. Here's the issues i have...

Problems: First off my resolution will not go above 1024 x 768. Even though previously it was a lot higher, can't remember exact resolution, but was higher than that. Next, when i go to device manager, the following are listed under Other Devices with Yellow Exclamation points by them; Ethernet Controler, Network Controller, PCI Simple Communications Controller, and SM Bus Controller. I've Googled, searched these forums, and tried each solution out there. But to no avail.

I purchased the laptop from Best Buy but i do not have any kind of recovery CD's.

Basically i think windows is not properly recognizing the hardware i have installed. Because the laptop screen can go to a higher resolution, but windows won't recognize it properly. Even Windows Aero isn't working properly, and the computer is marketed as a gaming laptop, so i know it has the graphical power.

Feel free to explain in detail as i'm pretty good with computers but this problem has me stumped. And for a person that will not stop until something is fixed, its driving me crazy.

Thanks for help in advance.

EDIT: I'm doing this off another laptop i have that has access to the internet (obviously). So if there are any programs i need to download i have the ability to do so.

Hi,

This sounds like a driver issue. My first recommendation is to let Windows install all updates, including Service Pack 1 - the Windows drivers are just as good as getting general hardware to work as the manufacturers drivres. This might fix the bulk of the issues.

Let us know how you get on.

Regards,
Golden

Welcome to Windows Seven Forums.

As you've re-installed Windows and not used an Asus recovery disc, you'll need to install drivers for your hardware devices before they'll work correctly.

You mentioned Best Buy so I'm assuming you live in the USA, please check this link for Asus support and driver downloads.

ASUSTeK Computer Inc. -Support- Drivers and Download K53E

When you bought the laptop it should have had the facility for you to create a set of recovery discs, but because you've installed a new copy of Windows that facility no longer exists on your computer.

If you want a set of factory restore discs you would need to contact Asus for them.

@Golden I have SP1 but the problems still persist. All the drivers i listed previously still do not work.

@seavixon That was actually the first website i went to. I wasn't sure what hardware i had in the wireless section, which was the first, and only, one i tried, so i downloaded all the drivers listed in wireless and tried them all. Unfortunately none of them worked. So i didn't bother trying the other categories. And i want to contact ASUS as my last resort.

Thanks for the help but still unable to get this working. Does anyone know of a legit program i can use that tells me what hardware i have. For example, lets me know if i have an Atheros wireless adapter as opposed to something else.

Thanks again for the help, and any future help.

Did you try a search on your computer's serial number at Asus support? It should give you an accurate list of what you have installed.

You could download Belarc Advisor, which takes an inventory of your hardware, software and update status.

Belarc Advisor - Free Personal PC Audit

Do you have a user guide or manual that came with your computer?

Failing that, you need to get in touch with Asus and ask them for a set of recovery discs. You can then restore your computer to its out-of-box factory state complete with all drivers.

Having done that, you can then use Windows Anytime Upgrade to upgrade to your copy of Windows 7 Professional.

The very first driver you have to install after doing a clean install is the Chipset driver for your laptop, next install the latest video drivers, then sound drivers, then network drivers in that order.

@seavixen I downloaded the Belarc software and under Network Drivers, which i'm assuming is my wireless adapter, it says none discovered. Also, when i did the serial number search, it just gave the general information for the K53E model laptop. No specific information for my laptop.

I also discovered that certain keyboard shortucts that are supposed to work from the hard ware, such as f5 and f6 being display brightness controls does not work. And multi-touch gestures such as 2 finger scroll does not work, as it did before the fresh install. And under Other devices in the Belarc summary it says i have a standard PS/2 keyboard and mouse, among other things.

@1Bowtie Where would i be able to see what type of chipset i have?

Go to the manufacture's website look for support, i'm sure they have all the drivers for your laptop. Whenever you do a clean install the chipset (motherboard) drivers are the first driver you put in followed be the video drivers, then sound, then network. But the chipset is the most important as it sets the motherboard to accept the rest of the drivers.

I've just re-read your original post and something doesn't sound quite right.
  1. Windows is on a DVD, not a CD.
  2. There is no ISO on the DVD, just the Windows installation files.
  3. What did you copy to the USB drive?
  4. As you've already got a Windows disc, why did you create a USB installer other than it is faster?
  5. Did you follow the instructions exactly to create the USB Windows 7 drive?
  6. If so, did you use a downloaded ISO?
  7. If you did, where did you download it from?
The main reason for asking these questions is that you might have a corrupted Windows 7 ISO. If you have, you'll need to download it again and re-create your USB Windows boot drive.

I think i may have the answer. I contacted ASUS and they said that i need to install every driver listed in each category. I've been downloading them and will install when i return home. Will post back if this resolves the problem. Thanks for the help
