As I understand it, only XP Pro, Vista Ultimate and higher with 7 Ultimate and higher can only remote desktop.

I see there are some alternatives to this like Teamviewer. With TeamViewer or any other software like this, does the app need to be present on both PC's to work?

Windows 7 Professional has RDP as well. Can't say about vista since I avoided that one altogether.

VNC is another option.

yes you will have to have it on both PC's, definitely with teamviewer (I use it a lot & can highly recommend )

You can try logmein as they have a free version. Works on most any version of windows except 3.11
