I am starting the process of setting up a Remote Desktop for my machine. I know virtually nothing about it, and at this point, I am only following instructions a friend gave me. However, his instructions are only so applicable, as he only uses XP, and knows nothing about Vista or 7. He did mention that he had heard that there were catches if the host is Vista and the client is XP. Any thoughts, tips, or advice?

I have used Remote Desktop in the past, but have switched to Team Viewer as it is extremely easy to use, and it works quite well (and is approved for use with Win7).

It is compatible with XP?

Yes I have family and friends still on xp and I have no problem with it.

It is compatible with XP as long as you have the latest version from Windows Update.

Also remember when you are setting up remote desktop into your computer from anywhere in the world you need to open the correct ports on your firewall/router to do this. By default, the RDP port is 3389 but can also be set to 3390. In Windows Vista/7 there is also new ways of connecting to renote desktop in a more secure way. In the remote settings options make sure you choose less secure if you are going to remote in with Windows XP.

It's not Microsoft, but here is your easy, seamless solution!!! Go to logmein.com and create an account with your email address and a password. Download the free remote access and install it. You will be able to to to any computer, log in with your password and take control of your PC at home. It is the easiest thing in the world and it's FREE!!! I have set up friends and family with this and it's great for trouble shooting and teaching the 'computer challenged'.

Teamviewer is also free and no need to mess with routers etc. as it works thru a webpage.
