Remove pinned start menu item

I must have dragged and dropped it from somewhere but can't find a way to remove Edit GP. Right click just gives me open. I know i can reset my start menu with a reg hack but don't really want to. Anyway to remove this sucker? I searched everywhere and can't find the shortcut. Thanks.

I had to use Process Monitor for this, to see what change occurs on the registry when you pin an item on the taskbar...

I found it though....You can remove it by entering this directory:

C:\Users\your_user_name\AppData\Roaming\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Quick Launch\User Pinned\StartMenu\

In there, you will find all your pinned items. You can delete Group Policy Editor shortcut and you're done.


Note: You need to open Folder Options and check "show hidden files and folders" and uncheck "Hide protected operating system files" so you can navigate to that folder if you can't just type the address on the search bar

Thanks for trying bro but believe it or not its not there. I bet i dragged and dropped it from control panel/all tasks, same with view prob history. No big deal i'll still use it, i just wanted to open it as author and set my window maximized. Thanks again.

I have had a look at this, and have also pinned this item to the start menu, together with the calculator, to see if I can find the solution. Like you, in your image above, this item isn't showing, but the calculator is. I haven't as yet been able to unpin the problematic shortcut. Right-clicking on it only gives the Open command, but doing the same with the calculator shortcut yields the full menu, including Unpin. I've looked everywhere that I can think of, including the registry and using the command prompt. It is possible to set policies to disable (hide) this part of the start menu, but it is not selective, i.e. it is all or nothing. What I haven't as yet tried, and I will do when I get time, is to temporarily make my standard account an administrative one to see if that makes any difference. I shall also see if I can simply drag it off the start menu. I will post back with the results of these ideas.

Edit... Just tried these last options. No change. Still unable to remove this item from the start menu. This would appear to be a bug as it should be possible to remove an item from the start menu if you were able to place it there yourself in the first place.

If you type "edit group pol" at the search, this shorctut appears too, still unpinned though, it has the same behaviour....right-clicking it only shows "Open".... Strange

Ok... Now I'm in the same boat as you guys.
Now I have two "edit group policy" pinned to my start menu. LOL!
I was also trying to recreate the problem and trying to find a solution.

I'm confident that this can be resolved soon

I suppose, if there is no other option is found, that you guys could create a new administrator account and copy what you want to it from the old user account folders, then delete the old account afterwards.

Just for a backup plan.

Yep i made one of those shortcuts to show all control panel tasks and dragged it from there to the start menu. Now we know not to do that.
