Solved Removing Items from Notification Area List?

How do I remove items from the notification area list?
No biggy, but I've noticed that I have apps listed in there that aren't installed anymore.
I've searched the registry for them, but that found nothing.

3. now you should see a list of program icons where you have the option to hide them

Thanks, but I want to remove them, not just hide them. I hate clutter and anything that adds to 'bloat'!

Actually, I just tried it the manual way and it works.

Do these steps from the tutorial in order carefully.

Remember, after you complete step 8 -

End explorer.exe and then restart it from the Task Manager, then reboot.

(Restart explorer.exe in the Task Manager.
NOTE: For how, see: How to Restart Explorer in Vista)

(restart the computer to apply the changes.)

The programs displayed in the notification area are autostart programs, to remove them use CCleaner - Download When you start Ccleaner click on tools, click on Startup. You can now highlight the entries that are no longer installed and then click on delete. Be carefull to only remove the uninstalled programs or other startup Programs will no longer work

The programs displayed in the notification area are autostart programs, to remove them use CCleaner - Download When you start Ccleaner click on tools, click on Startup. You can now highlight the entries that are no longer installed and then click on delete. Be carefull to only remove the uninstalled programs or other startup Programs will no longer work

Thanks for that. I have used CC for many years now - indispensable little prog. What you say though isn't quite correct though. There are a lot of programs in the notification area that are not autostart. They are still left hanging around even when the app has been uninstalled.

Anyway, retrying the manual method above PLUS ticking 'tray notifications cache' in CC seems to have worked. I'm not sure why, as I did the exact same manual steps twice before without success. I wonder if it has to do with the extra CC step?

I just did the manual way from the tutorial the first time and it worked. I didn't have to check Ccleaner's Tray Notification Cache option for it to work. But it's cool that CCLeaner has that option, which I didn't even notice it had.

Would you please care to enlighten me as to which programs are not Autostart? I am under the impression that they all are, accepted, they might not all show up in Ccleaner as some may well be in the Task Scheduler.

The main problem is that apps/progs that have been uninstalled (which may have been autostart) still show up in the notification area. This cannot be resolved by the method you suggested as they don't show up in any startup list, e.g. CC.

Right, thanks for this. I didn't include enough information in my first post. All these other auto start programs are started by the Task Scheduler (Right click on Computer Click on manage) and can be deleted there.

Next time I will know better.

OK, now I'm going mad over this.
I decided to give an example to pooch of what happens as the icons left are not started by the Task Scheduler. So, a program that I knew left the icon after uninstall was Powerstrip. I installed it, then uninstalled and of course the PStrip.exe was still in the notification tray.
So, I assumed the previous method of removing it would work, but no. I just can't get that method to work at all. It worked once (see above), but once only.
Just in case I'm doing it wrong, this is what I do:
1) remove the 2 entries in the registry
2) close regedit
3) close explorer (by ctrl-shift, right click on start menu)
4) restart explorer from task manager
5) log off
6) log back on.
Am I doing something wrong here?

I can't say with this method, Try it this way;

Type manage in Start Search, Click on Computer Management, Click on Task Scheduler, Go to Active Tasks and scroll down until you find Powerstrip. Doubleclick on Power strip The window will change. In the right hand Pane you should see a big red cross with Delete written next to it click on Delete.
Close the window

Go to C:\ Program Files x86 look through the folder If you find a folder called Powerstrip Delete it, You will most probably have to answer a UAC question. If you cant delete it restart and try again.
When you have done everything restart. The problem Icon should be gone

Ok I am with you now. This is the first time I have come across this list problem.
I understood that these programs were still trying to start or appearing in the notification area.
You meant they were still on this list and appearing in the notification area or not dependant on the settings of the list.

Have you tried a new start between uninstalling Powerstrip and trying to remove it from the list?

I have managed to replicate your problem where I have uninstalled a program, cleared the notification list, the entry was gone. Reinstalled/Uninstalled the program, I could no longer clear the entry. I tried several times to clear the entry by deleting the registry files, eventually I found that after a log off /on/restart, that the two registry entries were not being replaced.

I tried, Control Panel, click on Appearance and Personalisation, click on Folder Options, click on tab View, click on Show hidden files, folders and drives.

Go to C:\Users\Your user Name\AppData\Local
Delete Icon Cache
Restart Explorer
Restart the computer (Simply logging out does not seem to work)
Retry the Registry deleting the two files
Restart Explorer
Restart the computer
Check the notification list it should be reset again


Should there be a next time Ccleaner has an option under Cleaner, Advanced to clean the Tray Notifications Cache

This did not work while the Icon list could not be reset, but under normal curcumstances it should do the job without having to go to the Registry.

Equaly Deleting the Users file may also work.

I don't know why this doesn't work for you. I can get rid of the extra notification entries by doing it the manual way from the tutorial every time. delete the two entries, close regedit, kill and then restart explorer.exe, reboot. It works for me.

Hmm this has also worked for me every time I have tried it. The only thing is I didn't even have to restart. I just killed explorer with Task Manger. In Task Mangaer I clicked File > New Task > Typed: explorer to restart and the stuck icons were gone.
