Rep Recognition

I am wondering just how a person is alerted to the fact that they have received rep on any particular thread? The reason that I ask is because it seems that when I do rep someone, they are aware of it in very short order, because of their responses in my visitor messages.

I have never received any kind of notice of rep given me (not that it happens too often), but the only way I know of rep that I have received is to click my own rep scale, and that only gives me a total count, and no way to know when, where or by whom it was received. I'm sure that there must be a better way to know the score than that?

EDIT: I found a partial explanation in the sticky on Rep And Badges, but I find it hard to believe that everybody keeps checking that manually throughout the day.

You'll find that a lot of people do actually check periodically (as sad as it sounds, I still do )

I never used to but now, if I've been active on a thread, I check. It's not so much that I'm concerned about getting rep, I rarely do, but I'm worried that someone will rep me and I will miss it and not thank them.

Yep User CP at the top of the page takes you right to the rep page and yes you should check it once a day/week to give thanks for rep as the 2 above posters pointed out, especially important if you have had a "dry spell"

i long ago bookmarked 'user cp' as my sevenforums 'home' page.

i can instantly see replies to subscribed threads, as well as recent reps given to/from me.

in fact i very rarely visit the real sevenforums.com home page at all.

It seemed to be unwritten forum etiquette by others when I joined.
I continue the etiquette and other newer members mostly follow the example of others as I did.

When I get a Thank You from given rep two or three days later almost if not all have sent me a "Sorry just noticed...." or similar VM.

I have given two reps since last August and received no acknowledgment.
That is an excellent indication of a great group of people and a very polite forum.

I thought that you had to keep the badges and rep points that add up, but then a kind admin removed the badges and set my rep to zero. I'm happy to know that the badges won't be coming back, too bad that it is still possible to receive rep, but at least it doesn't show now.

Of course I gave rep to those who have helped me out (the information is in the usercp), but I don't want any of that stuff.

I have only just recently worked out about the reps in "user cp".
Now i check on a semi-regular basis, just in case i owe someone a "thank you".
Courtesy is alive and well in this household.

that means that if you rep somebody, they get five points added to their 'score'.

more senior members can give up to 45. (i think)

if you've received rep, you'll see it a 'latest reputation received section', at the bottom of your usercp page.

Some people thank you for the reps given, some don't - they either do not know the routine or they do not check. That's the way it is.

I thought 45 points was the highest now. John had changed that from 50 a while ago.

It is a nice system, but one should not get too fuzzy about it. There are a lot of idiosyncrasies.

REP POWER = how many points you add to someone's rep, the higher your rep the more rep power you have (there is a maximum limit of 45 rep points at the moment).

To check who gave you rep, scroll to the very bottom of your user cp, you should see something like this: (person who gave rep is shown in red circle)
