My old HP desktop's DVD drive has started making random odd noises and occasionally won't read certain disks.

I'm assuming it's time for a new drive. Device Manager says what's in there now is:

hp CDDVDW TS_H653R SCSI CdRom Device

What do I need to know to get a replacement internal drive?

Thank you!

You need to know if it is ide or scsi

Even though Device Manager says it's SCSI, it could be IDE?

That is just a SATA interface CD/DVD drive. OEMed from Toshiba/Samsung by HP.

"This Toshiba TS-H653R DVD drive features LightScribe disc labeling technology providing you an easy way to label your own discs! Plus, its SATA interface offers fast data transfers! The TS-H653R records to DVD±R media at 16x and DVD±R DL at 8x! This multi-format drive also writes to DVD-RAM at 12x, CD-R at 48x and rewrites to CD-RW discs at 32x!"

Google 'TS-H653R' and you can buy used/refurb units on Amazon, eBAY, etc if you want an exact same drive replacement.

Or just buy any internal CD/DVD SATA optical drive from LG, Samsung, ASUS, Pioneer, Plextor, etc.

The 'SCSI' notation refers to the protocol used to communicate to the drive over the SATA interface.

Actual SCSI hardware interface CD drives have not been around for a long time (they were a thing in the 1980s-90s).
I have them (caddy load, not tray) on my early 1990s DEC microVAX.
