I would like to request some assistance from the knowledgeable folks here at SevenForums.

I have been running Windows Vista 32-bit for several years, with very occasional BSODs and much more frequent system hangs (where the screen freezes and I need to hard reboot).

On Sunday February 20 I finally got round to installing Windows 7 64-bit (a clean install of Windows 7 Professional).

The next day I had a BSOD but none since. I have had one system hang since then.

Now that problems have persisted beyond a clean install I am assuming it is a hardware problem of some kind but I would appreciate it if I could have some guidance.

I have attached the documents requested in the BSOD Posting Instructions thread.

Basic system information:

Windows 7 Professional x64
Full retail version.
Original OS on the computer was Vista 32-bit.
Clean installation of Windows 7 performed on Sunday February 20.
Computer is about three years old.

Many thanks in advance for any assistance offered.

Several problems

1- asacpi.sys (2005) a uge cause of BSOD's

The pre 2009 version of this driver is a known BSOD cause.
Please visit this link: ASUSTeK Computer Inc.-Support- download_item_mkt
Scroll down to the Utilities category, then scroll down to the "ATK0110 driver for WindowsXP/Vista/Windows 7 32&64-bit " (it's about the 8th item down).
Download and install it.
Go to C:\Windows\System32\drivers to check and make sure that the ASACPI.sys file is date stamped from 2009 or 2010 (NOT before).

2-Old drivers need updating

How To Find Drivers:
- search Google for the name of the driver
- compare the Google results with what's installed on your system to figure out which device/program it belongs to
- visit the web site of the manufacturer of the hardware/program to get the latest drivers (DON'T use Windows Update or the Update driver function of Device Manager).
- if there are difficulties in locating them, post back with questions and someone will try and help you locate the appropriate program.
- - The most common drivers are listed on this page: Driver Reference Driver Reference
- - Driver manufacturer links are on this page: Drivers and Downloads

3-Avast. Remove and replace with Microsoft security essentials

http://files.avast.com/files/eng/aswclear5.exe

4-Memory Corruption run memtest to test yours

Download a copy of Memtest86 and burn the ISO to a CD using Iso Recorder or another ISO burning program. Boot from the CD, and leave it running for at least 5 or 6 passes.

Just remember, any time Memtest reports errors, it can be either bad RAM or a bad motherboard slot. Test the sticks individually, and if you find a good one, test it in all slots.

Many thanks for your reply, zigzag3143.

I am puzzled and a little concerned about the issue with Avast. I did have it installed but I uninstalled it two days ago and went with Microsoft Security Essentials. Does your comment mean there are traces of Avast left on my system?

I have grabbed the Asus driver and will install it later.

phc700.sys - Must be the driver for my Philips webcam. I downloaded the latest driver from Philips after installing so I do not think there can be a newer one. And I am waiting for a new webcam to be delivered so I will be uninstalling it anyway over the next few days.

As far as the other drivers go, according to http://www.carrona.org/dvrref.html:

nvm62x64.sys - Nvidia ethernet networking driver (nforce chipset drivers). I downloaded and installed the latest chipset drivers a few days after I installed Windows and I assume this driver was part of the package. If there is a newer version of this particular driver, I cannot find any trace on Nvidia's site.

spldr.sys and spsys.sys - security processor drivers listed as coming from Windows Update. Does this mean they should be part of automatic updates via Windows Update or should I go into device manager and tell Windows to look for updates for them manually?

GEARAspiWDM.sys - Just downloaded latest drivers from Gear Software.

amdxata.sys - AMD storage controller driver from Windows installation DVD. Looks like the latest driver and updates would come via Windows Update.

dump_nvstor.sys - Not listed specifically, although dump_nvstor64.sys is listed as "driver created to provide disk access during crash dump file generation". Update to come via Windows Update or "3rd party driver manufacturer, depending on the source driver", and I am assuming the source driver is...

nvstor.sys - nvidia storage drivers. I have already installed nvidia chipset and video drivers for my hardware. If this driver is not part of one of those packages I am not sure where I should look on nvidia's site for it.

I will download Memtest and create a CD to have a look at my memory.

Any further pointers or comments?

Many thanks again.
