Restore points get stored in System Volume Information

Hi All,

I am taking a snapshot of local drives using "Restore Points" configuration. The drive snapshots get stored in the "Systems Volume Information" folder of the same drive.

I dont want snapshots to get stored on the same drive. So, is there any way to have snapshots reside on a remote location than the SVI ?

I have seen that, we can configure this setting in Windows 2003, in "Shadow Copies" tab in the properties of the drive. How to do the similar in Windows 7 ?

google failed me :shock: however, one thing I have noticed on my system, is that if you make a system image using Backup and Restore Centre and store it on a seperate drive, it turns off system restore stating "on systems with a system image older shadow copies will be deleted quicker" im guessing this means it doesnt want the restore points and system images fighting for space, and the image is a restore point anyway effectively,

does that seem a suitable workaround?

Try taking ownership of the "System Volume Information" or set permissions. You should then be able to manipulate it the way you want.

Open Folder Options, and go to the View tab. Select "Show hidden files, folders, and drives", and clear all three "Hide" boxes. After you do that, you should be able to see the "System volume information" folder. Right click it, select "Properties", and go to the "Security" tab. Click the "Advanced" button to take ownership.

Alternatively you can just take ownership of the folder using the reg hack.

You might have to turn UAC off.

Thanks Severedsolo & Bill2 for your resposes. But your answers did not solve my purpose. But what I found from other VSS posts that, we cannot change snapshots getting stored in "Systems Volume Information".
I will have to search more on VSS now !
