I've had this problem previously, but recovered normal functions by running ToolWiz. For whatever reason, this has previously been successful, but not this time!

Have tried a couple of fixes in the tutorial section, but cannot get the downloads to run, as the message pops up again when I try and open the file, with no right click option.

However, and this was discovered by pure accident, if I right click on the programs which generate the fault message (all of them!), and select 'run as administrator' in the drop down, all the programs will run ok!?!? This, despite the setting of my account to be administrator!

The question is, does W10 do a clean install, or just upgrade? I've bought an SSD, but don't know whether to run the W10 install, and then clone and install the SSD, or do a full reinstall of W7, run the W10 install, THEN clone and fit the SSD? My concern is that if W10 doesn't install clean, I'm going to pass the problem on.

Any thoughts, people?

Thanks for the reply. I'm still confused as to the cause of the probe. If it concerned the corruption of the file extensions, why does selecting 'run as admin' bypass the problem?
Seems to be something else entirely?

Hi,
Yep sounds like a slightly messed up user account,
Which I would make a new administrator user account
Change the other to standard and delete it.
Then upgrade as you wish after confirming the issue is gone.

Thanks for the suggestion, but no go. Tried creating new admin account, but same result. Also my daughter's account and the Guest account have the same problem!

However.... much experimentation, and a bit of lateral thinking, later, I have a solution, though still no understanding of where the problem lay.

I had found that right clicking the faulty icon, and selecting 'run as admin' would enable the programs to run. So following the same logic, instead of selecting 'run as admin', I selected 'send to..... desktop (create shortcut)' Replace the old icon with this new one, and hey presto, everything runs fine!!!
I've now completed the same actions for all the programs on the desktop, and normal service has resumed! :D

But, as I said above, still no understanding of where the problem arose.

Thanks for your help, and here's hoping the problem stays away for a while!

PS Can I assume from your comments, in a previous post, that changing the HD or graphics card (before attempting the W10 upgrade) will prevent the install?

Sorry, didn't make myself very clear re the 10 upgrade! The help tutorial on this site says the upgrade is 'referenced against the motherboard, cpu, and graphics board'
I have a new graphics board for the desktop pc, so presumably I should defer installation of this until after upgrading to W10, as I have already registered for W10 with the current components?

Hi,
I doubt the gpu/ graphic's card makes any difference windows will install a drive for which ever is installed no matter what,
cpu is another story which someone would have to reset COM I've read for that upgrade,
Mother board yes that is tied to any OEM version of windows.
