If it opened the notepad, I think you did not rename from KB_Spy.cmd.txt to KB_Spy.cmd

You may have the file suffix hidden (very dangerous). You can run a executable file thinking it is another type.
Open Control Panel\All Control Panel Items\Folder Options - View tab and uncheck "Hide extensions for known file types"

I have no idea what an "executable file" is, but I've opened Folder options and unchecked the one you mentioned. Then I clicked on Apply.

I did a little research on YouTube and saw a couple of sites with listed updates that should be deleted because of telemetry. So I used their KB numbers and the ones from the notepad that kicked up and I manually deleted those updates -- and Windows update is set to Never Check for Updates. The laptop had a few of those on the list, the desktop pc had only about 3 of the listed updates, and they've been deleted from both computers.
And this morning the laptop started like it's supposed to. Thank you.

This morning, I started the laptop, and it froze up. I did the Launch Startup Repair, and it did no good. I used the laptop for about an hour and then shut it off. About 3 hours later I started it again, and it froze up again. Any ideas what I can do? I don't recall having startup issues after I had changed to Windows 10, only since going back to W7

Open Device Manager. Is there any yellow alerts of missing drivers?
Run WU manually. See if it finds any driver update. Don't install other updates than drivers or you will have the telemetry back.

Run a disk check

Open a CMD window as administrator and type:
chkdsk c: /f
It will say your disk is in use and ask if you want to schedule to next start = yes
Restart
Pay attention on the results, specially bad blocks, bad clusters, bad sectors etc

The check disc showed 0 bad file records processed, it showed no problem with 498408 indexes -- as for security descriptors, the numbers being checked stopped increasing, then it did nothing for about 10 seconds, then jumped to another page which flashed by very quickly and the only thing I saw said something like Windows made changes to something -- then the screen disappeared and the laptop went to the start menu.
Maybe it fixed something -- we'll see how tomorrow goes (it froze up twice today, and once last night while it sat idle while I was showering).

Could a weak laptop battery be the cause -- even though I have the electrical charger connected when I start it up?

It's better to remove a battery that don't hold any charge (shuts down just after you remove the charger).
A dead battery can damage the internal power supply.

I usually leave the laptop plugged in, but when I disconnect the power, the battery lasts for just a little over one hour while I use the laptop. I went into the Start Up Menu, and Start Up Test, and it shows "Failed". It gives a Failure ID code 24 digits long and says "Primary Battery". QC7Q6X-000APC-XD002J-C08A03 An hour run time doesn't seem like a failure to me, but maybe I should just get a new one and give it a try??
