I have Win 7 on a 2010 Toshiba laptop. Just tried upgrading to 10 and it was a disaster. Constant malfunctions and unusably slow. So I reverted to 7, and now on won't start. Goes to BSOD, then tries to enter "Startup Repair," which fails. I do have install disks for 7. Before going to 10 I tried to back up my files but now that I might have to wipe the drive I really would like to check files I might have missed, if there's some way to do that before the 7 reinstall. Alternatively it would be nice to get 7 going again without the reinstall.

Hello mate if you want to retrieve data see this

RETRIEVE DATA WITH A BOOTABLE UBUNTU OS
Make a bootable Ubuntu disk/stick Download Ubuntu Desktop | Download | Ubuntu
Set the BIOS to boot from the optical when the machine boots it will show you a screen with TRY or INSTALL > select TRY not INSTALL
When it is finished - it takes very little time you will get a screen like in the pic .
Open the drive you want > User and dig down until you get to the data / settings you may be able to copy / paste the material you want to an external source or other installed drive doing this.
I am not sure if it will but I have recovered tons of data etc using this method both on "dead" or just plain drives that you cannot get data from using Windows. I like to use a CD as I am not keen on sticks but the second option will allow you to try out Linux if you so wish;)

Now I find the Ubuntu is slightly easier to set up and both run in a non Windows environment which does away with any conflicts anyway see my pic of what Ubuntu looks like.

Edit I meant to mention personally I always do a clean all the drive before a reinstall after trying 10 mate - makes for no issues. http://www.sevenforums.com/tutorials/52129-disk-clean-clean-all-diskpart-command.html
