Solved Run Ubuntu 11 as dual boot alongside Windows

Hi,

I wanna install Ubuntu (dual boot) alongside Windows. Is it as simple as just booting from the Live CD, selecting install Ubuntu, making a partition from the hard drive and installing? Is that it? After Ubuntu get's installed, when I boot up the computer, will it give me the option to boot from Windows or Ubuntu?

Yes that's the way but using separate HDDs to boot them separately would save you a bunch of head-aches later.

Yes, the Bootloader will be changed to Grub2 on the newer versions of Ubuntu and Grub2 will be used to boot Windows. The process is quite straightforward and painless.

As was mentioned above, the preferred method of installation is to install both the Ubuntu OS and Grub onto a separate drive, which you would then choose when the computer boots up. For we former Linux fanatics, who change Linux distros like socks, it makes life much easier.

Please answer in detail, as I am wishing to install Ubuntu on a business laptop, so I want to make sure NOTHING GOES WRONG .

It will not change anything

Or if you would like to install Ubunutu inside windows without changing the Bootloader

Then insert the Disk while you are logged on in windows then run wubi.exe

After that Click

Install inside Windows

This will create a Virtual Harddrive on your Windows Installation and give you the option to boot into either Ubuntu or Windows

Yes it will - For both Methods

I prefer the Install Inside of Windows because I do not like the GRUB2 Boot manager

ok i don't have much experience in this but i tried ubuntu about 6 months ago. back than i had xp too in a ubuntu/7/xp muti boot configuration. at boot time it will show the windows 7 bootloader and when ubuntu is selected it will go to the GRUB loader. i can't surely say that this is gonna happen because it may also have happed because of my XP/7 dual boot config. you Should try it. but i advise you to make a backup.

That doesn't make sense, I don't think there are 2 bootloaders, only 1 can be used, in this case, GRUB2 or Windows bootloader. Thanks for trying Jamal. Anyone know which OS it will on default start after 10sec's?

Um, you must have used Wubi, as default, Ubuntu when installing changes the boot loader from Windows to GRUB2. Can anyone else answer the question?
