running out of free disk space on virtual machine

I am running windows 7 on a mac using parallels desktop. when trying to start up windows 7, I now keep getting a message that i am running out of free hard disk space and it wont even boot up the system. i've only used about 20% of my hard drive, so i don't understand what is causing this. can anyone help?
