running Win7 and discs not being recognized drive is shown

Here is a tip that has worked in the past.

Uninstall the optical drives in Device Manager.
Power down the computer to OFF. Disconnect the optical drives power & data cables.
Power ON the computer for a full cycle, check to see that NO optical drives are shown in Device Manager. Power down the computer to OFF. Re-connect the power & data cables to the optical drives. Power ON the computer, making sure it is connected to the Internet so win7 Updates can check for the most current drivers. Then let's see if they work.

I realize that there have been a lot of postings on this and it would be a bit frustrating to take in all the information. Accessing the optical drives power & data cables I assume means opening my tower, correct? Part of the myriad of information in the multiple postings has been that due to all that is going on here with renovations as well as some health problems makes it not possible for me to open up my tower right now. I suppose that further work on the problem just might have to wait until some of the chaos subsides.

bobsscgirl, Take as much time as you need ,I know we have all given you advice and it's very hard to take in all at once , wait until your restoration work is finished and you have the spare time ,then we will walk you through all the steps you may need to take

An update:
Since I use a Windows Explorer sub (x2) I rarely open Explorer. I did that today and noticed that unlike x2 in Explorer the DVD drive does not show. I am not sure how this figures in with all the other facts known about this problem.

Ok I have just about officially given up on my husband saying he would help me ck out the dvd /cd drive. Can someone give me specific directions on how to open my tower what to ck for the possible disconnection and if necessary what I need to get if there is a replacement necessary????

Hi bobsscgirl, sorry I missed your post (thanks for the PM) to get inside your tower you need to unscrew 2 screws at the back of the tower on the right hand side (looking from the back of the tower)



then pull the side panel a little towards you and tilt over and release the panel

these are SATA connections



these are IDE connections




this is how the 2 types fit the devices



just remove the cables and replace them back in the same position ,sometimes this works ,if not post back and we will try something else

Since I had not heard from the forum I actually did it myself last night. Believe it or not I did pretty much what the directions said. I found out after I took the side panel of the tower off I also had to pop off the front panel to be able to access the drive slot. All the connections appeared intact and I went ahead unplugged them and replugged them with no effect. I have ordered a new drive, hoping it comes in soon. And yes my puter still seems to be working. Will update along the way.

Your CD drive or DVD drive is missing or is not recognized by Windows or other programs
Your CD or DVD drive can't read or write media
The CD drive or the DVD drive does not work as expected on a computer that you upgraded to Windows Vista

Hopefully your new drive will work first time ,follow Doc Browns advice (post #61) and the links theog gave and you should be OK. Once again I do apologise for missing your post Now you know how to take your tower apart have a good look inside if its a bit dusty give it a blow with a can of compressed air around the fans and the cpu and gpu fans ,Try and make a mental note of where cables go and come from where the device cards are etc

Just out of curiosity, what make & model DVD drive did you order ?

It was a dvd rw I think. Quite honestly after my husband kept forgetting, putting off etc helping me with getting into the tower I was finally able to get him to help with the ordering the drive. He used to run Windows (now Linux) and still can remember some stuff I guess.

I will most definitely follow up on this info too. I have to say there is no way in God's green earth that I would ever touch his Linux infested machine. It has nothing to do with the Linux aspect of it but more that I would first not even ask to touch it and more if by some weird thing he let me touch it and I would break something on it.......... well howdy I would never ever hear the end of it. Hey I have to live with the man!

theog, I hear you on the first post. I guess I was referring to the posts inbetween and the steps etc that I was info'd about and was told to follow and the info those contained.
