S..L..O..W.. folder date info

I have a directory/folder that has about 10,000 files in it (an image sequence).. Whenever I access the directory, it takes F-O-R-E-V-E-R to get date info on the files.. I was overwriting some of the files with a new render, but the render stopped.. I wanted to see where it stopped by looking at the date info, and it took 7 or 8 minutes before the green gauge at the top finally finished going all the way across the address bar, then the dates started popping on one at a time.. Tick... Tick.. Tick.. very slowly..

Why does it take so long? I have a Quad-core notebook with raid array, each of these files are only about 2M each..


Also: I noticed when I overwrite the files, it doesn't update the date information.. The images are still showing their original creation date, even though I rendered over them... ???

Umm.. No..

I don't have this problem accessing the same folder via XP over the network..
How can it be faster over the network than local access? Vista and 7 both display the date info SLOWLY, almost one file at a time..

What is the use of all that constant hard-drive reading via the search indexing, if everytime I access a folder it still has to read in the folder information at that point in time?

I mean, if I switch to a thumbnail view all the thumbnails come up instantly, no problems.. But go to a detail view and it CRAWLS...

Matthew, that is a LOT of information that it has to chug through.

You may try manually indexing them. It will take a long time, but you only need to do it once.

Are you running an antivirus? One with a real-time scanner? Or do you have some third-party explorer shell extension installed?

Nothing else is running.. This is a clean OS installation with one application installed.

Matthew, that is a LOT of information that it has to chug through.

I've never had this problem until Vista/7, and I have been dealing with huge image sequences for decades..

I can take the same image sequence and open it (with full details) on my XP machine and there is no slowdown.. That is on an older machine, too..

It doesn't make sense, there must be some setting or flag that is set wrong..

Try "customizing" that folder for "Documents" and see if it goes away.

If they are images, Explorer will automatically switch to "images" mode and try poening every single file to get image thumbnail, size info, camera settings annd ghod knows what all. I find this one of the more irritating issues in all versions of windows. Even XP did it but the amount of data it tried to gleen was much smaller and didn't take so long. But even on XP I locked the format of all the folders on the drive to documents mode.

You might try "exploring" Explorer alternatives for really fast file and folder manipulation. A really nice one is "Xplorer2" (non-free).
