Solved Samsung 840 EVO preventing sleep

I just purchased this SSD to replace the 830.

The 830 allowed sleep, but this one will not.

I have the same settings I had for the 830 in power options

If I click Start and sleep, it will not sleep.

I called Samsung and they said I should just turn comp off, but that does not solve the problem of going to sleep after a scheduled WMC recording.

Is there a setting I am missing in the new SSD?

Are you running Samsung "Magician"? If you've run it and don't see it as a taskbar button, check in the notification area. Then close it and remove it from your startup programs. For more on "Magician" and Samsung's bizarre position on sleep, see my message from yesterday:

I knew about running Magician from my previous Samsung 830 - I never let it run if I want the Sleep function.

This just seems to be a setting in the new SSD that I must be missing.

Fixed the problem.

Samsung Magician had changed "Turn hard disc off" to never.

I changed that and the comp now sleeps after prescribed time. although if I click the Sleep button, there is no immediate Sleep.

But that's OK and not a problem.

I've always configured my main PC that way on purpose, and it currently has a Samsung 830 boot drive. It sleeps several times a day, both automatically (including the WMC scenario you mentioned) and after I click the Sleep button. It worked the same for the Intel X25-M and all the hard drives that preceded it. I really doubt that option works any differently for the 840 EVO.

I would guess it's fixed due to some unspecified side-effect of updating the power profile or simply not running Magician or closing it from its tray icon after closing the program through its window. Many people have reported that simply not running Magician restores the ability to sleep. Others said they needed to undo changes to the power profile, but I haven't seen the "Turn off hard disk after" option mentioned before now. Again, I've never found that option to prevent sleep, and I've been setting it to "Never" for a looooong time.
