I have no idea what is causing this, but it is preventing me from printing two-sided. I can't see ink levels, the Smart Panel won't tell me when it is printing, in power-save mode, distributing ink, out of paper, or even when one of the covers is open. It just sits there with the message "Printer status is not available" and has been stuck like that since I transported it from my house to my dorm Sunday.
I have tried reinstalling the drivers and Smart Panel, from the web site AND CD, and rebooting. I have received various error messages while installing/uninstalling these, and when all is said and done, this message returns.
I can print, but any settings I change in preferences WILL NOT BE SENT TO THE PRINTER.
