My SATA fixed hard drives are in removeable bays ( drives C & D ). In XP, I could HOT-SWAP drive-D with no problem. Windows7 does not allow this. I'm using an older ASUS A8N-SLI MOBO, and there are NO Windows7 drivers for it, so this MAY be the root of the problem. Has anyone had success using removeable trays with Windows7???

I have two trays that I use with both Windows 7 x86 and x64 but it is not Windows that is usually the problem. I have a Gigabyte board with an Intel ICH10R set up for RAID and two of the non RAID drivers are in the removable bays. With this contoller , the only issue I have is that there is no safe to remove capability natively so I use a program called Hotswap that works very well. If I use the other (JMicron) controller in ACHI mode then I get the safe to remove icon that occurs normally with Windows.

What is your problem with Windows 7?

I used a hot swap backplane in a case I had. I was a little hard to set up. You have to be in AHCI mode and have the drivers but Windows 7 is no problem with hot swapping.

No luck so far

I've been researching this problem, but still CANNOT get my SATA D-Drive to Hot-Swap. I use removeable trays, and frequently change this drive as I work. This worked just fine with WindowsXP.
I DID change a registry setting under ' current control set ' that supposedly was necessary, but that did not help.
Here is one solution: A program called " HotSwap " that will work:

Hot-swapping drives in Windows 7 Tech That!

I still think that Windows7 has a serious problem here. Let's hope there is a fix when the first service pak is issued.
