Solved Screen display & sleep functions not working

I've set the screen display function to switch off after 5 minutes and the sleep after 10 but nothing's happening....

Any ideas thanks

Hello Arcadian mate are you setting the display though the Control Panel?? - see pic - if so then it might well be worth running these for starters to just check the system and for any nasties.
SFC /SCANNOW Command - System File Checker
Disk Check < if necessary include the /f and /r in the command line as per Option2 (if you are going to use the /r switch there is no need for the /f switch)
Run these in safe mode and the sfc often best run for two to three runs – you can leave out the /r switch in ckdsk if you feel it not necessary


if no fix then these

SUPERAntiSpyware | Remove Malware | Remove Spyware - AntiMalware, AntiSpyware, AntiAdware!
Malwarebytes | Malwarebytes Premium
AdwCleaner Download
ADW download from bleeping computer delete any rubbish found with the malware scans
(NB If you are running Kaspersky as the main AV then it might need disabling it when trying ADW because it does not like it at times)

Well I don't know if it was something I linked but what I did is a useful set of scans to remember.

Just by the by if you are not using it this is really well worth using on your machine to keep it tidy and has many useful tools CCleaner - Free Download or try CCleaner Professional - Piriform if you are not familiar with it we can give you a few tips on using it

Plus this it is my bible when installing or fixing friends and relatives machines and will make your machine run that little bit quicker and more efficiently. You may lose some of the "bling" like transparency for example (you don't have to) and I think is a good aid to finding your way around the OS

PS I see you live in one of my favourite counties too - lovely spots there - me I am an ex pat Sussex man

Same here I've used CCleaner for yonks as well wouldn't be without it on my old Win 7 and Win 10.

In fact I've only used two others alone for ages as well, firstly Junkware Removal Tool by Malwarebytes highly recommended by my local repair guy who's been in the business over 30 years and is the first thing he turns to when there's any customer faults as it's magic every time something goes wrong. That and WiseCare 356 Pro for general weekly maintenance covers all my needs perfectly.

I'd originally suspected it was a system fault too as the Control Panel you illustrated was set correctly. So started out with JRT as usual which didn't remove much of anything special, then CCleaner finally WCare 356 which somewhere along the line cured it.

The only thing to watch out for with this triple combination is that after using WCare 356 a bit it can sometimes leave a few odd bits behind which can slow things down over time, so after every WCare check I do a final JRT which hasn't failed me yet in a good 6 or 7 years. The only reason I posted the question was because I couldn't work out what could be the root cause until you mentioned the whole system could be responsible so thanks.

Just on the Exmoor boundary been here 18 years odd so great place to retire in one day....

PS : If you haven't tried it out yet give JRT a whirl out of interest....

Ok tried the JRT and it ran in a command window and then just suddenly stopped so I have no idea what was done as opposed to CCleaner which lists the removed stuff. So I am wondering does it create a log of what it did and just where do you find it and also the restore points??

Yes well it would be nice to retire where you are and me well there are loads of places out here that I would like to live mainly in the cooler areas like the south coast of NSW some parts of Victoria and especially Tasmania because it does resemble in a lot of ways the old country.

I think what a lot of people in the UK don't know that distances out here are very different to the UK and Tasmania is the only place like the UK - where one doesn't have to travel far to the next town. I live in the Central West of NSW and a typical shopping trip is a round 80-100kms and to major centres like Sydney it is just about 400kms . That is reasonably short compared to travelling north to Queensland and a very long way from Western Australia.

Anyway I have never regretted moving out here because of the lifestyle and the ability ot get ahead as long as one doesn't mind putting in the hard yakka.

My last trip back to the UK was last August and me and my now ex partner took a tour of England, Scotland , Ireland , and Wales. It was great to do that and we spent a week with my brother who lives in Chippenham but it was good to get back.

So a visit out here would be good if you are interested f only to see the diversity of out here.

Anyway I have raved on a bit eh?

There is a log kept in JRT if you click on the main icon, but haven't checked for a restore point. However I did find this long thread on their forum which is a bit too technical for me....

Interesting reading about Oz thanks as I've a couple of friends out there. I've travelled a lot mainly around Europe and spent a few years in Sweden a country I really liked, also lived in S. Africa for 2 or 3 years as well. But in the end decided Devon was the place for me as I was born here though finished up in Kent for a while until I got itchy feet back in the '70s.

Oh nearly forgot, the fact that there's several small specialist breweries locally (even the real original stout which is great as I hadn't tasted it for years) and my local is about 5 minutes walk away is one of the main reasons I'm happy to settle down now...!

Hmm well unfortunately I am tee total now - mainly because I overdid it in my younger years or I would like to try the specialist brews they often are so much better than the mass produced stuff eh? There are a few out here and some good ones they tell me in Tasmania, plus they also specialise in their own types of whiskey.
