Solved seagate st3500830as temp norma

my seagate is running at 27 c under moderate load is this normal as on speed fan i do a online analsis of drive and it says for this drive min temp 28 max temp 50 average 40 so i want to know is my hard drive running fine and what temp is it not good to run at in terms of min

this is a 32-bit system
Most hard disks are rated upto 50-55 degree celsius. Though manufacturers tend to err on the side of caution in this matter to avoid law suits and such like. 27 c under moderate load is pretty cool, I must say.

The seagate document for this model and similar models mentions max operating temp 60 C.

I would start getting a bit nervous beyond 45 C.

i meant is it excellent to operate at 27 c it is just that seems a bit cool is there a temp low when it starts to affect the performance and what is it

You'd see performance degradation from low temps if you kept your PC in the freezer :),
but 27°C is in the medium temperature range for HDDs, I wish my temps were this low.

It would also depend on the ambient temp, obviously the hard disk temp cannot be lower than ambient temp. The minimum operating temp is 0 degrees celsius so your current is fine. Of course if you live in areas that have temps like -30 degrees and all, its difficult because mechanical disks are not built to operate at those temps.

Theres really no defined "optimum" temp if thats what you're looking for. Most of us are actually trying to cool down the darn things.

See, theres no simple max limit for drive temperature- it depends on the ambient temp and the work load. With 30 degreees ambient you'll be hitting over 40 degrees on the disk easily, you can't get the disk easily below 40 degrees even with active cooling. OTOH, if the ambient is only 20 degrees, then if you are hitting over 40°C it's because of bad airflow or the disk being stressed.

Then theres the question of how reliable temp sensors are.The placement of the sensors can produce different readings.

Theres also a "10°C rule for electronics/mechanics" which says a temperature rise of 10°C will halve the expected lifetime. This would presumably be because rapid rise and fall in temp would make the platters expand and contract, creating the possibility of mechanical failure.

I personally like to use the "differential over ambient" for calculating the max desirable temp. As I already said, over 45 makes me nervous. Otherwise ambient plus 20-25 would be the max desirable IMO.
