Search from taskbar appends http:// / to single words

Greetings all, I posted this here ( http://www.sevenforums.com/browsers-mail/199895-ie9-adress-bar-questions-2.html ) but "A Guy" suggested I create a new thread, so here we are!

In case it matters, the following post is a modified version of the one found on January 5 at:
win 7 taskbar address toolbar error: adds backslash to url - Microsoft Community

I have a fresh install of Win 7 Ultimate x64, with IE 11 and all Windows Updates installed. I would like to search from the taskbar-mounted-address-bar. For search terms with a space in them, it works perfectly, but if I type in a single word, it appends http:// and /, and tries to navigate to the url instead of searching for the text.

The IE option "Go to an intranet site for a single word entry in the Address bar" is unchecked, and in fact disabled through the Group Policy Editor.

Any suggestions? Thank you.

I've never seen a search in the Taskbar could you show us what your referring to/ via screen shot,
See the links above my signature picture,
Also fill in your system spec's and which other browsers you have installed and which Security suite you have,
Also include any third party utilities you've add,
Did the issue happen in ie10 ?

Note: This is also occurring on my desktop computer, so it is probably functioning the way it's programmed in Win7, and I just want it to behave differently.

That's how I set up my taskbars; auto-hiding on the left side of the screen. The address bar is one of the integrated options in Windows - Right click the taskbar > Toolbars > Address

system specs: as this is on multiple systems (which vary significantly), it doesn't apply
other browsers: IE 11 on both computers, also firefox v26 on desktop
security suite: MS Security Essentials with all active protection disabled
3rd party utilities: none that I can recall. Perhaps Hamachi? But it happens even if Hamachi's off/exited
In IE10: didn't check, but on my laptop I tried uninstalling IE entirely, and it did still happen

This is just a wild guess but I would expect using the Address search would point to searching for a website ?
I've never used it personally possibly someone else here has ?
If you want to search a local file press the Windows logo key and type in it instead,

As far as I know, when you mount an address bar on your taskbar, it's exactly the same as any other Windows Explorer address bar. You can enter a path to one of the directories on your hard drive, a website, or search from it. It's all automated by the way MS programmed it, I don't think it even has anything to do with IE, though that's hard to say for sure.

What do you mean by "Address search"? I am not using it to search for local files.

No, it's the same as a browser search bar, i.e. Google. A single word search won't work it has to end with a domain name such as .com.

This, then is normal.

Okay, so even if that is normal, I want single words to also search, instead of trying to resolve into addresses. How can I do that?

With multiple words, it uses your default search browser/engine. In my case, google.ca in Chrome. I just want the same behavior for a single word. It doesn't seem like a huge difference, I just don't know how to config it.

You can't use the Address bar in the Task Bar to do it. You have to open a browser, open a search engines and put in your word. I have to put in the .com or something to make it work at all.

Thank you for your help Britton30, but I disagree.

I seem to remember an option in a GUI somewhere, that offers to append http:// and / to text, but I haven't been able to find it again. Even if that is not the case, I think it should be doable by the registry.

Anyone else have ideas?

In the OP it reads

It was a good suggestion though, thank you Slartybart. Any other ideas?

@Britton30 was there anything I wrote that suggested I want to search my PC? I want to use it for web-searching, that's all. That's what it already does with multiple words.

Well no, there was no way to tell where you were trying to search, hence the question.

Anyway, when I input just two words in the address bar it always come up in IE11 as, "Page Cannot Be Found". Do you have some other search program installed?

No, this is not a 3rd party addon or anything, it works from any Windows Explorer address bar, including the one you can mount on your taskbar. It uses your default browser and default search engine to search for whatever you enter, as long as it's got a space in it.

Since it is not working for you, you must have disabled searching from the address bar, or something like that. It works with a clean install of Win 7 Ultimate x64.

It is similar behavior as if you type into the IE address bar, but more convenient to me on the taskbar, usually.

so we're all working from the same page. The reference should be to an address toolbar on the taskbar



One Box is referenced in IE9 features: One Box - Microsoft Windows but there isn't much I could find regarding control over "one word Intranet" address resolution other than what Ira has posted and I linked in post 14

To rephrase the issue:

When searching in the toolbar address box for a single word, One Box (Microsoft's Search feature) thinks you might be searching for an Intranet address and "helps" by adding a prefix and suffix
http://singleword/






This only seems to occur in the toolbar address added to the taskbar.

The link I gave in an earlier post and Ira's 1st post point to IE advanced tab options and offers a Group Policy change as well as registry entry changes. Appearantly these do not have any affect resolving the issue

Methinks it's a bug!

Perhaps the solution is not using the address toolbar
.. replacing it with a user toolbar containing search
.. or pinning search to the taskbar
could use a little help figuring out how to do either, but I think pinning search to the taskbar is a better soultion for Ira

Thought I had it by making the same registry modification to IE Local Machine, test came up with a jumplist
http://singleword/
search for singleword

but subsequent tests with a new word gives me the intranet prefix/suffix again. Must have just been history.
