Search Programs and files does not work on my new computer

I recently got a laptop and the the Search Programs and files text box on the start menu does not work. If I type anything in it nothing I do not get a search result. If I type something in it like "CMD" and press enter nothing happens. It has been like this out of the box for a few months. Now I want to get his PC running like it should. Thanks.

On the assumption this is a new laptop factory preloaded with some version of Win 7, the search function should work straight out the box. I'd suggest doing windows updates, but this is such a basic funcion of W7 there must be something wrong with the OS and you should initially get support from the maker of the laptop if it is under warranty.
