Securing a zip file

I dowloaded 4.10 , and made all the setting changes, rebooted.

i created the RAR, exactly as you described. When I click on the created RAR file, I see all my files . no password prompt. Only the files themselves are protected.

I suspect my accountant may not know about RAR files ( only zip files) , but its still a moot point.

Are you saying that when you click on your RAR file, it prompts you for a password??

Try re-reading the post, I updated it with better formatting and neater images, might work as it might have been hard to understand before.

I would try doing it again with the updated post, if not post back, something must be wrong.

Okay, looks like I missed the final check box after the password.

So, now I have a properly encrypted RAR file...

But those steps unfortuntaley didnt work for ZIP files. Still puzzling why that ability has vanished.. used to do it all the time (password protected zip files).

If my accountant cannot open RAR files, I am still out of luck - big office - he is not the only one working on my files...

Way too tired tonight to give this any more thought. Windows 7 has once again worn me out. Got about 15 minutes of real work done tonight, 3 hours lost on configuration.

PROBLEM RESOLVED.

And the winner is: WinRAR!

Spoke with my accountant and he conferred with the firms IT group - they decided that WinRAR would be a good thing to install! So now I can send protected RAR files

Always good to see light at the end of the tunnel.

All is good, but I have a question.

When I create the RAR file, it correctly prompts for a password.

When I open the individual files from within WinRAR, or if I extract them and open them in explorer, there is no password on the individual files themselves.

Suppose I wanted them to be protected as well. Is this possible?

Reason I would want this is once attracted, filed can be copied, moved, lost, etc...

To recap :
-using ZIP, the archive is exposed, but files are protected.
-using RAR, the archive is protected, but the file are exposed.
-can I set options such that both the archive and the files are protected?

You could try putting each file in a Passcoded RAR and put the Passcoded RAR's into the main RAR.

or, I could create a zip the file in one action (which would protect each file) and wrap the zip in an RAR file..

Doable I suppose ; I was just kinda hoping I could do it more seamlessly..
