Solved Security issue: IE10 Security message when opening MSN

I normally use MSN as my home page when I browse with IE10 as my default browser. This morning when I checked my email I had a message that purported to be from Microsoft that stated thew following:

Microsoft account
Security alert
We think that someone else might have accessed the Microsoft account <...>. When this happens, we require you to verify your identity with a security challenge and then change your password the next time you sign in.
If someone else has access to your account, they have your password and might be trying to access your personal information or send junk email.
If you haven't already recovered your account, we can help you do it now.

The links seem to be from MS but are not clear (I omitted them in this post). Now here is the strange part: when I browse to the MSN url in IE10, it comes up with a seemingly authentic web page asking me to more or less do the same thing, reset my password. Even when I open the MSN web page from, say, a Google link for MSN obtained while I am on Yahoo.com, I get the same suspicious web page for MSN.

I did a Sys Restore to a few days ago, same thing (everything was fine before this morning). Finally, I opened my Mozilla browser and typed in the MSN link, it opened up with the expected normal MSN home page that I always used.

So now I suspect something is wrong with my IE10 browser. How can I check whether this is a browser issue or is a real MS issue? I would really hate to have to reinstall IE10 but if necessary I will.

ie10 is not available for re-install anymore,
ie11 is your only choice beside a different browser,
See if the issue happens with safe mode with networking,

No difference in safe mode.

Nothing is actually wrong with IE 10. I believe this is a site-specific problem unique to the one site, MSN. All other browser functions are quite as good as always on all other sites. The one difference between this site and the same in FF is that IE keeps me logged in to MSN, I suspect that may be part of the problem.

What I need to find out is:

*What process does IE use to navigate to a web address; wher does it get the information (URL) on what site to go to

*Would deleting cookies and other history files help? How do I identify the files specific to MSN?

I managed to get logged out of the MSN site. When I returned, it showed the normal page I have always seen, except I was not signed in.
