Selling a Windows 8 Key

I had a computer I was running on Windows 8. Of course I upgraded free to Windows 8.1.

Later when I was doing a factory reset the computer crashed and wouldn't power on. After resetting the BIOS settings manually and doing several other things, it looked like I needed a new motherboard. I should have bought one and learned how to install one. Instead I just sold all the parts to the computer.

I never sold the Windows 8 key. I wasn't sure how it would work. Is this something I can just sell online and email to the person? Will they have any problems activating it?

For example, I have bought several used computers. I'm sure the keys were used before. But I did not have any issues.

Would I have an issue selling this key?

And is there anything I should put in the product description for them to be aware of when buying it? I like to be a descriptive seller.

If it was a retail key, you can sell it. An OEM key works only with the mobo where it was first installed.

Careful doing it on ebay, they are really picky about that stuff. I had a windows me upgrade disk that said this disk can be sold, it was on the disk itself. My item was canceled by ebay. I never sell on there or anywhere now, I told them to take a hike nicely in the feedback. Even when I complained about it, the other sellers/buyers didn't believe me that the disk said that. I don't have the disk anymore. I think what happen is whoever made the OEM disk at Microsoft goofed.

I hate to open a can of worms. This makes me really :mad2: at ebay and Microsoft. Big stores can sell it but the individual or small businesses can't. I thought Oem's can be only sold to system builders, did something change that I missed?

In theory and according to the EULA that is correct. In practice it does not work that way.

And Thrash Zone is right - if your OEM had been already installed before, it is stuck to the mobo where it was first installed.

I have a question then based on your response:


I just bought a new PC with Windows 7 installed on the hard drive.

My plan was to move my current SSD with Windows on it to that computer. And I was going to move one of hard drives on the new computer to my old one (the one that has windows on it).

What are the implications of this?

You said an oem key could only be used on the computer that it was sold on.

What if I just switch the hard drives that have windows on them? Because I have a SSD in my old computer I want to move to my new one. Could I just switch it computers with the other hard drive with windows? Would that be okay? I plan to sell the old computer. Again, could you explain any implications this might have and give some suggestions?

Implications are simple - it won't work for a variety of reasone.

Okay so I should wipe it both computers and hard drives and just reinstall Windows on both. Once I switch my SSD and install Windows I should reinstall using the key for that new computer since its tied to the motherboard and not the hard drive, is that correct?

So you have a Windows 8 Oem key for each computer? That different than. I will let Whs explain how to do it and remain under the EULA. My grammar is not that great.

As far as ebay, I wouldn't sell a key or oem disk. The computer as a whole or without an os should be ok to sell.

Just make sure that the OEMs remain with the PC where they were first installed.

No. Windows 7 on both of my computers. The Windows 8 key was a key for an old computer
