"Server Not Found" - intermittent drops in web access

Hi all,

I'm having a bit of a problem with the internet, but only on my Windows 7 PCs.

Every now and then, my web access will stop for a minute or so and pages won't load. I get the "Server Not Found" message in Firefox and if I open up IE, I get the equivalent message.

I'm sure it's not a hardware problem as it only statred happening on my PCs since I switched to Windows 7, but it doesn't happen on my wife's XP laptop. In fact, if the web access drops, I can go over to the laptop and the pages will load without a hitch.

Overall internet access to the PCs is fine: I can be downloading a rapidshare file in the background, and the web will stop working but the rapidshare download won't be affected.

I'm unsure as to whether it's the same as this problem, this problem or something else. Either way, I'd appreciate some advice on the best direction to go in.

Thanks!

Any ideas?

I dont suspect you are having a dns problem. More likely it is your "homegroup" IPv6 problem. Homegroup is supposed to be win 7 machines only. In mixed environments you should be using "workgroup" and its IPv4.

Pretty easier to change. just make a new network connection using workgroup and when it is up and running disable IPv6.

It was happening before my wife got her laptop, though. The laptop isn't part of the homegroup either, as it's a work laptop which only connects to the router for internet (the rest of the network is on a wired gigabit switch).

I'd already disabled IPv6 before posting (shoulda mentioned that) but it didn't cure anything.

So now In Network and Sharing Centre I've changed Network Location to Work Network and left the homegroup under "Choose homegroup and sharing options", but I'm still getting problems. The workgroup under Computer properties on the start menu was already set. Have I missed something?

Are you having any 3P antivirus/firewall installed? I presume there is some problem with the browsers since rapidshare download works eventhough ur browser drops the access.

Also when this issue happens again, try to do a ping to the website address and check whether the conn is live.

Last but not least, try safemode with networking and check whether ur internet connection drops.

I have Comodo Firewall and avast antivirus, but if I disable them, I still get the same problems. The problem seems to be resticted to the browser, although the rapidshare download was downloading fine in firefox, even though web pages stopped loading.

I've now tried to ping the websites when the problem happens, and it doesn't work, then if I try again 30 seconds later it does.

I've tried safe mode with networking to no avail.

My PCs (except for the XP laptop) use a wired connection and the drivers are all up to date

Mixed OS System... oposite problem

I have about a dozen pcs on a business network with most active pcs on W7 are working fine but all of the XP pcs that actively use browsing are having regular intermittent drop of internet connection and network connection. Release/renew and all is fine for some period of time. The period of time between drops shorten til it gets down to a couple of minutes. Same thing on 1 macbook. Win7 pcs all fine. This mixed invironment worked just fine for 3 months then all of a sudden constant problems. Also have a 7 year old copier/printer with nic that stopped working at the same time. I've been focused on router, firewalls and dns. Seems to me like this is real common globally the past 2-3 weeks. I'm going to get ride of "homegroup" on the one win7 pc that's using it and will turn ipv6 off on all win 7 pcs. Any advise is greatly appreciated.
