Is there a program or registry tweak to make Windows Paint the default program to edit all picture files but not the default viewer?
I have tried the following in the Registry but I still get "Windows Photo Viewer" when I select edit in the right click menu. I still prefer a old freeware version of ACDsee as my default viewer.

HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\SystemFileAssociations\image\shell\edit\command

Change the default of mspaint.exe to your image editor of choice.

"%systemroot%\system32\mspaint.exe" "%1"

Thanks

No, there is no such feature in Windows as selecting "default file editor". The user is only able to choose "default file opener" - Windows file system does not distinguish what the user intends to do with the file after it is opened.

I quite often use different programs for photo viewing and photo editing. I make the photo viewer the default program to open with a double mouse-click, and I use right-click menu "open with" to open the phot with my photo editor.

Some photo editors have the ability to create project directories. That way you can open the editor first, then navigate to a project directory and open your editable files within the application itself.

Photographers who shoot photographs in RAW have the advantage that they can specify file association, and set their editor as the default opener for RAW files and set their viewer as the default opener for JPEG files. That would be another solution. But if you don't use RAW format, then it is no good to you.
