so im in new territory here.
i have setup my home pc (windows xp sp3) that is on all the time to allow incoming connections and the ports through firewalls.

now this is where im confused.
im using a windows 7 laptop
and i want to use the xp internet recourses hence the vpn.

i login and it accepts my credentials but then gets stuck right after saying lost the connection.

i have a domain from comcast.
but like i said im in new territory here and not sure what to put in for the vpn.
do i put in my domain ip or my ip of my whole network?

so you can actually enter your credentials and it accepts them. Enter a wrong password and it says "invalid password" or somethiong like that? If so ... you connection to vpn is working fine. no firewall issues.

What vpn client software you use on laptopn in win7?
What vpn server on winxp? You use pptp or ipsec as protocol?

Are you sure you connect to the ip-adres of winxp machine? Assume on windows7 you connect to something.comcast.com. Can you try to connect to 12.12.12.12. Does it change anything? I mean does it ask for credentials? Just to check if the credentialquestion comes from vpn server.

Both are on same lan-segment now you say. Is that correct? If so: in winxp check it's ip-address. so in "command prompt" IP-config. And write down ip address. It should be someyhing like 192.168.X.y
Connect from laptop to that number
can you ping that number from win7 laptop?

go to properties of vpn connection (on win7). Goto "security" tab. VPN type: L2TP/IPSEC
click on advanced settings just below VPN type. Select preshared key and fillin that key. You use preshared key security on openvpn server?

Having vpn on one lan is stupid but this is just a test. To connect remotely form the internet you have to enter the wan ip addres of winxp machine. so on winxp goto www.myipaddress.com and that number should be filled in in remote client. If course winxp must have a static ip-address from lan-router. Just register a number for it in router's dhcp server. Something like "if network card with mac-address 11-23-AA-BB ask for ip address" give it 192.168.0.23 you understand? And forward some tcp and udp ports as well on router to winxp machine. TCP and UDP port 1194 are for openvpn

yes ive been interchanging the comcast ip and the local ip.

so you want me to go onto my router and do what exactly?
i added a pptp to my xp

i dont believe that my router has a setting for static ip
netgear wnr2000v3

but i can just set a static ip in tcip settings on the xp machine.
unless im missing something

first make it work on your local lan!! Then there are no router issues. for local lan you only use the "switch" in the router. the router does nothing with local pc to pc traffic!

edit:: i got it too connect on a home network but like stated not sure what ip to input when im on another open wifi.

also when i connected to the vpn my wifi had internet but the vpn stated no internet connection. this might be a problem.

So you were able to connect to vpn-server from your local lan is that correct? After that "also when i connected to the vpn my wifi had internet but the vpn stated no internet connection. this might be a problem. " happens on vpn-client? If so on vpn-client (still connected to vpn-server) open a "command prompt" and type:

route print -4

post to forum the routing table. Something like:
