Share Files From Windows 7 to Windows Vista and v.s.

Hello everyone

this is my firt post in this lovely forum. I really need help and any reply im sure it would defanilty help me.

I have a Dell desktopn Windows 7 OS (64 bit) and windows Vista Vaio laptop (32 bit)

I would love to hear from you how to create a network through the wireless connection to share files, photos , etc.

note I have both of them connected through the same wireless network.


Please I need to have a step by step explanation as much as possible.

Hi, Windows 7 uses a new technology to share files called HomeGroups our administrator Brink has created a series of tutorials to help:

I think your post help only in case of connecting between two Windows 7 operating systems.

I would like to connect Windows 7 with Windows Vista

As far as i read Windows 7 uses Homegroup and Windows Vista uses Workgroup. I think the start from here

Please help me if you have any info.

The only way I have found to do this is:

Open command prompt
Type: ipconfig
Get IPV4 Address for computer you want to connect to
Hit windows key
In search area type: \\169.168.1.100 or whatever ip number for computer you want

This will work if both computers are connected to same router.

If you can ping machines in your wireless network, all you need to do is think of what you want to share. then create that share on the machine for others to connect to.

Eg \\computernamea\sharedfolder$

Can't be any simplier.

Microsoft.com has a great walkthrough & video about networking computers running different versions of Windows, I'd check that out first.

There's also a thread over at Microsoft TechNet that has good step-by-step instructions for the same process.

Sharing between different Op systems means that you can't use Homegroup for sharing. In case you weren't aware of this Zeshana.

I'm also wondering why on earth anyone would use \\sharename to connect when there is a perfectly good GUI for this purpose. IMO there are countless GOOD reasons to use the built in GUI.

To use the built in GUI just follow the directions here> Networking home computers running different versions of Windows

Thank you everyone the videos help but i have a problem

from the vista or windows 7 when i go to network I only see the computer I am using. in other words the computers are not reading each other for some reasons

anybody knows what the problem is? I will be more than thankful

Can you ping the other computers? If all your machines are on the same network/vlan it should show up.

Where exactly are you seeing that they don't show up?

how can I ping the other computer?

from the Vista or 7 I go to my computer and then network. I only see the computer itself it doesnt show the other computer.

I am sure I have the same workgroup name and they are connected through the same router.

Get the IP from ipconfig from the other machines. Then test ping.

If the other machines are connected to your wireless network, then theoretically it should show up in your network.
